Rumors around the block state that Asus will be axing all 8.9-inch Eee PC netbooks in 2009. According to several reporters, Asustek’s president of Asia-Pacific division, Benson Lin, was quoted saying that the Taiwanese corporation has decided to continue in the path of 10-inches and 7-inches only, which means no more 8.9-inches for the masses. That makes us wonder why those two sizes – from one hand, the 10-inch version is so popular in terms of netbooks that Asus plans to sell 95% of this size at 2009, and from the other hand, the 7-inch version that has literally ignited the ultra-portable trend, is planned to take 5% of their sales, for 3G purposes and telecoms service operators use. In our opinion, Asus will have to comply with market needs and seems that we’re expected to see 12-inch devices in the near future, or even bigger, but it will surely exceed netbooks limits.

The “Never Ending Meizu Story” continues to make splashes around the globe, as we hear that Meizu’s M8 revolutionary/clone smartphone is making a debut in China nowadays, coming up with either 8GB ($348) or 16GB ($421) versions, a 3.4-inch 720 x 480 touchscreen, Windows CE 6.0-powered OS, Built-in 3.2MP Camera and wide range of codecs support, including MP3, WMA, AAC, Ogg, FLAC, APE, AMR, MPEG-4, WMV, Divx, Xvid, H.264, or FLV. Battery wise, you can expect getting up to 21.5 hours of Audio and 7 hours of video, while using the M8 as a multimedia device. Otherwise it’s just another cellular unit, supporting WCDMA (3G), GSM EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 standards that will allow any user to speak all over the world. Mind you, according to Meizu, the 16GB model is currently “out of stock”, so stay tuned for more tales to be told.

First time we’ve been covering LG’s X120 netbook, we were excited to learn it will pack a designated Splashtop-powered “Smart ON” OS that was created exclusively by the company in order to enable fast bootup for the users. Now that the X120 becomes official, we’re glad to realise it will also have 3G HSPA connectivity inside, together with the usual 1.6GHz Atom processor, 10-inch WSVGA display and a 160GB hard drive. Other than that, it looks pretty much the same, in terms of specs, but seems like the 3G capabilities will force higher prices when this netbook comes out in Europe somewhere around March.

Update: LG has officially confirmed that the Japanese release will start at the end of March, while Europe and 20 other nations will get this one on April.

Only a month after releasing its unattractive Archos 10 netbook model, the French corporation is looking forward, announcing a new generation of ultra-portable Mini PCs, which is expected to be released somewhere in April this year. The fresh Archos 10S lineup packs a 20mm chassis together with 3.5G functions, 1GB of RAM and up to 160GB hard drive. In addition to the 10S version, Archos plans to release in 2009 a 9-inch tablet PC with a virtual keyboard plus handwriting recognition feature that will join Intel’s Menlow-based Atom Z5xx processor and the 160GB HDD. Further more, Archos claims that both new portable computers will support high-def video playback, VOD and digital TV, while revolutionary 9″ tablet is said to have even more stronger edition, powered by Intel’s Moorestone MID platform that will presumably make a debut in 2010.

Update1: Archos officially rolls out the 10S  Mini PC and the 9-inch Tablet PC, both to be available somewhere this Fall.  The new 10S netbook will apparently include a 0.866’’ Ultra-thin chassis, packing a 10.2-inch display, an Intel ATOM 1.6 Ghz CPU with 1 GB of RAM, and 80GB hard disk storage.  Price wasn’t given up to this point but we’ve added a new image to the post.

Nothing much to tell, but seems like Lenovo plans to launch its IdeaPad S20 netbook with a 12-inch display, somewhere this year. The rumored S20 will join the already-exist S10 version which carries a 10-inch frame, but screen size aside, the new model is expected to pack an Atom N280 processor instead of the N270 inside the S10. Additionally, the S20 will carry Intel’s GN40 chipset, together with the usual Windows XP onboard. Still no word on exact date release but looks like the bundle will be priced at around NT$20,000 (US$586). Stay tuned.

It’s been a while since we were last hearing from Asus about any new netbook release, but no worries the Taiwanese are here, live and kicking with the Eee PC 1000HE, which is part of the 1000H lineup, only capable of providing up to 9.5 working hours (!), thanks to the high-density battery and Super Hybrid Engine technology that the company has developed. Surprisingly, the official announcement first popped up on ASUS Eee PC Facebook group, suggesting a 10-inch LED backlit display, together with a 1.66GHz Atom N280 processor, 160GB hard-drive, 802.11b/g/n WiFi connection and Bluetooth 2.0. Price wise, the new 1000HE model will set you back for $399 in pre-order, but FB group members get an additional $25 discount, which makes the entire deal very affordable. We keep getting lots of news about independent systems, designed for your personal netbooks, but this new Fedora-based OS from Intel looks very interesting and already confirmed to be working with Acer Aspire One, Dell Mini and even some Asus Eee versions (without wireless support). Although it’s still in Alpha mode and plenty of water will flow in the river until perfection is achieved, this open-source system which carries the name Moblin 2, might be a good solution for early adopters who crave for a cheap and stable platform to replace their Windows XP. Those who wish to install it might find a good internet connection manager, fast booting performance, nice transparent  design and other Linux goodies inside. However, if you’re not a computer literate, you might find yourself in troubles, fighting pesky bugs that have a special affection for preliminary software stages.

Update: April 3, 2009 – Intel hands over this very promising OS to the Linux Foundation, to keep it as a neutral body, although Intel itself stays in charge of this project behind the scenes. Yes, tech world has its own small politics, you know.

We’ve already expressed our huge disappointment from the iRiver Spinn and conveyed our hopes when the new firmware update showed up, but recent cheering rumors, coming from Korean forums, imply for a new black Spinn edition to be released during this year in addition to the already exist silver version. Remember this cool Hello Kitty C1 netbook we’ve recently introduced? Turns out it is a branded version of Olevia X10A, designated for Hong Kong markets and priced 30% cheaper than the Japanese model. Now Olevia rolls out the X10A-3GPB netbook, which boasts the same specs, including a 10.1-inch 1024×600 display, an Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 120GB of HDD and other usual stuff, only with an integrated HSDPA 3G module, allowing you to surf the internet without the need for hotspots. Regretfully, there’s no word on pricing, but this release proves again that built-in 3G modules are becoming more and more common among the netbooks world.

Aspire One is one of the top selling netbooks around the globe, thanks to the nice minuscule design and the impressive 8.9-inch display, coming with a reasonable keyboard, a fair 120/160GB hard drive and some other alluring specs which make it so likable. Having said that, it seems Acer won’t settle down until a 10-inch version will be released, and while speaking, the guys at jkkmobile have managed to put their hands on Acer’s next generation netbook, carrying the name 103 and packing a 10.1-inch display, Intel Atom 1.6 Ghz N280/N270 CPU, 1GB of Ram, 160 Gb HDD, Multitouch trackpad, Bluetooth/Wifi connectivity, SDHC card reader, 1.3MP webcam, Windows XP OS, and built-in 3G capabilities (Optional). Naturally, there’s no word on price or availability, but I guess everyone expects this version to go out in the following months, so stay tuned for further developments.

Update1: Acer has confirmed the new 10-inch version. 3 models are expected to be released within Acer’s Aspire One D150 series – The first, which suppose to hit Europe on February, is the D150-0B that includes a 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 display, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB memory, 160GB hard drive, and a 3-cell battery, all for about €329 ($425). The second, which suppose to hit Europe on March, is the D150-1B, boasting  the same specs as the previous model, only with a 6 cell battery inside, will set you back for €349 ($450). The third, which will be scheduled for March as well, is the D150-2BG, coming with an Intel Atom 1.66GHz N280 processor, a built-in 3G quadband HSDPA/UMTS broadband and a 6-cell battery, all priced at €449 ($575).

If you’re looking for a portable device that can literally provide everything you need (coffee is not included) in terms of computing, the new e-Loam F7 UMPC might be your low-cost solution, as the 7-inch touchscreen device comes with a 1.2GHz VIA C7 CPU (similar to the HP 2133 netbook), 1GB of RAM and a fairly big 80GB hard drive. In addition, it houses Windows XP inside, together with a 2-in-1 card reader, a 0.3MP webcam, stereo speakers, Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, all packed in a nice black sleeky design that easily fits your carrying bag.

It was just a matter of time until Gateway would join the netbooks pile, and today we’re glad to get a confirmation it already did, as a blackish 8.9-inch netbook, carrying the industrial name of LT1004U, was spotted on Office Depot in Redmond, WA with a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, 160GB HDD, Windows XP onboard and an Aspire One rebadge design. Speaking factually, it’s just another usual netbook, the kind we’ve already seen around, but there is something alluring about Gateway’s new toy after all, knowing it cost only $379.99, which clearly stretch the lower pricing borders of these devices. In any case, you can always jump to your local branch to get first-hand impression.

We know, touchscreen players are the hottest thing around the block, and many companies are doing enormous efforts to take a share from Apple’s control over the market. Although it is unproclaimed, Sony has a great interest to confront the iPod Touch head-to head when it shows out its latest NWZ-X1000, a 3-inch OLED touchscreen Walkman player with WiFi capabilities and either 16GB ($299) or 32GB ($299) capacities to choose from – pretty much identical to the iPod Touch – heh. Additionally, the UI unveils sort of a “cover flow” feature to handle your music, while technologically the Japanese has finally integrated the noise cancelation element, in case you’re using a 13.5mm EX headphones. We’re still lack of any further details concerning other specs or availability, but meanwhile you can checkout the video after the break.

Update: Feb 25th – It is now available to order from Amazon UK, as shipment is set to 5 weeks. The 16GB Sony Walkman NWZ-X1051is priced at £214 ($310) while the 32GB version, the Sony Walkman NWZ-X1061,will set you back for £283 ($410).

For many of us, the name Archos relates to advanced multimedia players with quality video display and robust frame. But the French brand has already realized that the trends shift to some other directions, binding them to move forward and to be straightened with global tendencies. As a result, the company has joined the overcrowded market, introducing the Archos 10, a 10.2-inch netbook with ordinary specs like 1.6 Ghz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 3 cells (6 optional) battery, 160 GB hard drive and Windows XP onboard. Nothing special in terms of design, but you also get a 1.3MP webcam, a card reader (4 in 1), 3 USB 2.0 ports, and the usual internet connectivity stuff. Still no word on price or availability, but we sure hope to hear more from this direction.

Update1: Archos 10 is now official and ready to go. The specs remain similar to those we’ve already noted up . In addition, you get 10/100 M Ethernet controller, 802.11b/g WiFi, PCI-E interface, 2 stereo speakers, VGA output, and a mic. Archos also loaded up various software, including Lotus Symphony Working Suite, XnView photo editor, Vtuner Web Radio & TV Player, BitDefender Antivirus 2009 and Parental Filter. As for the numbers, the Archos 10 is priced at $399 for the 3-cell battery version, or $449 in case you’re a 6-cell avid.

Update2: The Archos 10 is now available to order, starting at $399 for the basic package.

Update3: In case you’re keen of Barbie style, the French company has just released a Pink Archos 10 edition, to be available across Europe with the same specs and prices we’ve already mentioned earlier.

Update4: Now you can get even more, as Archos 10 Ubuntu Edition is up and available for 375 Euros (around $525), including the same specs, only with Ubuntu Linux OS inside, paired with 2GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive.

LG’s new X120 netbook is almost identical to the previous X110 version, featuring a 1.6GHz Inte Atom processor, along with a 10-inch WSVGA display, 1GB of RAM, WiFi connectivity and 160GB storage capacity, but the new edition comes with a designated Splashtop LG-Smart-On OS, which allows you to boot up the netbook in just couple of seconds and work on your basic tasks, like internet, mail, music, Skype, etc. outside the installed WIndows XP system (like Asus Express Gate). Unfortunately, there are no other details, regarding price or availability.

After the Mini 9 and the Mini 12, Dell rolls out the 10-inch version, which naturally answers the name Mini 10. The new netbook comes with more advanced specs, including an integrated 3G cellular connectivity, a built-in TV tuner edge-to-edge keyboard with multi-touch capabilities and an amazing 10-inch display, supporting 720P 1366 x 768 resolution. Other details are pretty usual, as the Mini 10 features an Atom Z530 CPU and 802.11 Wi-Fi connection. No further info to share, concerning memory, storage options, pricing or availability. Stay tuned.

Update1: apparently, you can find it in Tesco, with specs including 1.6GHz Atom Z530, 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, a multi-touch trackpad, Windows XP and 10-inch display (of course) for £349 ($480). Mind you, the top version which includes built-in GPS and optional WWAN might be priced much higher.

Update2: Turns out the Tesco thing was just a fiasco, and the 10-inch Dell netbook was apparently just a Mini 9 version, so i guess you should probably wait further more.

Update3: It seems like QVC.Com is taking orders and first buyers will be able to get their Dell Mini 10 on March 20th, while Dell.Com will be taking orders on the 26th.

update4: the Inspiron Mini 10 is now available at Dell’s website, six days before the reported date. Naturally, it’ll include all the aforementioned specs, with a starting price that suppose to be similar to QVC’s 559$ price tag.

Update5: Bummer. The Dell Mini 10 comes with a non-upgradable RAM slot. The meaning is that you won’t be able to add more memory to the already-exist 1GB stick, and while other brands give their users a full access to replace their RAM or Hard Drives, this move from Dell looks very foolish.

Update 6: Despite some disturbing delays, those who prefer buying the native 1,366 x 768 resolution screen (with 720P support), instead of the regular 1,024 x 576 display, can finally get it for extra $35 in Dell’s website.

Update 7: From now on, Chinese users will also be able to get the Mini 10 in their country, as the new netbook was just announced there and will be available on China Mobile with a full 3G data package.

Update8: Dell just added a new configuration to the Mini 10, allowing you to upgrade your brand new netbook into a 6-cell battery, by dropping only $30 more.

We keep getting more and more information from Viliv, as the Korean brand sheds more light on the S7, a 7-inch ultra portable MID with 1024 x 600 swiveling screen, supporting up to 1080p videos, thanks to the “Blueray HD video playback” capabilities that the company is obliged to add to this great device. Additionaly, you can get either 1.3GHz or 1.6GHz Intel Atom processors, along with 1GB of RAM, 802.11b/g WiFi connectivity, HSPDA, and even WiMAX capabilities. Asus keeps showing us it has a lot of stuff to be proud of, as the company unveils the T91 and the T101H tablet netbooks at the CES 2009 show in Vegas. Both devices come with a swiveling touchscreen, allowing them to be used as tablet computers, as the T91 packs an 8.9-inch display while the T101H has a 10-inch screen. Both feature Z520 Intel atom processors, together with a built-in GPS navigation system and even a TV tuner, which is a little suprising and preliminary withing netbooks. Regretfully, there are no further details, concerning other specs, availability or pricing.

Update2: Looks like Asus’ Eee PC T91 has been officially confirmed to have a first UK debut somewhere around early June, priced at £450 ($685). Still no word about a US release, but we’re following the announcements very carefully.

iRiver likes to keep many of its announcements to the CES show in Vegas. This time, the Koreans are offering a glimpse at the new P7 PMP, a 4.3-inch media player with WQVGA (480 x 272) touchscreen, an FM tuner, a microphone, a microSD slot, 7EQ and either 4GB, 8GB or 16GB Flash storage memories to choose from. You get a wide range of multimedia support, along with SRS WOW HD audio enhancement and strong battery that provides up to 50 hours of continuous audio playback. Still no word on price or availability, but in addition to the P7, the Koreans has officially introduced the E50 and the E100 Season II players, which we’ve already discussed recently. Update1: The iRiver P7 is up for a Stateside pre-order at J&R, for $200, as shipping is still unknown but marked “coming Soon”.

It’s CES time and plenty of announcements are making their way out, as the companies try their best to catch our eyes with new technoligies and lavish shapes. One of those products, which made us drooling all over the place is the new Sony Vaio P, an 8-inch netbook with an astounding LED-backlit 1,600 x 768 XBRITE-ECO LCD display, only 1.4 pounds weight and plenty of top-notch features, including Windows Vista onboard, Intel Processor (1.33GHz, 512kB L2 Cache), an integrated 3G WWAN capabilities, a GPS module, built-in webcam, track pointer inside the keyboard, 802.11n WiFi/Bluetooth connectivity and a battery that can provide up to 4 hours of use or 8 hours in case you’re equipped with the optional high-capacity cell. The Vaio P design is breath taking and you’ll be able to choose between onyx black, crystal white, garnet red, emerald green, or classic black flavors, somewhere around February, starting at $900 for the basic package, which houses 2GB RAM and 60GB HDD - Definitely not cheap, but absolutely worthy. Update1: while US residents can only get the 1.33GHz CPU version, Japanese VAIO P models also offer the 1.86GHz Intel Atom processor, which is significantly stronger. Having said that, you should know that a 1.86GHz processor, along with a 64GB SSDis priced at $1,549, or even $1,899 in case you want the 128GB SSD option – Too Pricey !
