CES 2008: iRiver Spinn PMP

Another iRiver player unveiled at the CES show, the iRiver Spinn. This beautiful glowing PMP has a 3.3″ AMOLED display (480 x 272), DMB TV, FM radio tuner, Bluetooth 2.0, microSD slot, microphone, 4/8/16GB storage and more. Like the P20, this player supports the new iRiver Spinn technology, probably to scroll menus with a “warm analog controls”, but we are not sure about the meaning of this slogan.

CES 2008: Sony Mylo 2 Goes Live Officially

After months of speculations, Sony unveiled the Mylo2 at the CES show. This cool mini PMP device is a portable wireless player with a neat QWERTY sliding keyboard that features WiFi internet surfing, Flash Lite 3 support (for youtube) and instant messaging communication. Other features include:

  • 3.5″ touchscreen (800×480).
  • Storage Size: 1GB.
  • Audio: MP3, WMA, AAC, ATRAC.
  • Video: MPEG-4.
  • Pictures: JPEG, transcode GIF, TIFF, PNG and BMP.
  • Features: 1.3 MP camera, mini USB, Skype support, instant messaging support (AIM, Yahoo, Gtalk), and more.

    CES 2008: iRiver P20 PMP

    It seems like a very active year for iRiver. The company generates many of the news, coming out from the CES show direction. Their recent PMP announcement is the P20, a 4.1″ AMOLED screen with 16M colors. Other features include Bluetooth 2.0, FM tuner, DMB tuner, microphone, TV output, SD card slot USB host and 120/160GB of storage. The new gimmick in the P20 is the Spinn. It is an analog toggle wheel that uses the Spinn every turn, with the new interface.

    Samsung P2 and T10 Get Blue Wave Firmware Update

    After long expectations, Samsung released the Blue Wave firmware update for its P2 and T10 PMPs. The awaited firmware features Bluetooth support that enables wireless file sharing with other Bluetooth supported devices. In addition, the new firmware allows Bluetooth phone integration, so you can handle your phone from the player. The recent update also improved the touchscreen respondency, the brightness adjustment, the album art and more.

    Cowon D2 New Skins

    Cowon D2 seems to be one of the leading players in the market. The small and brilliant media unit is equipped with great sound quality, awesome video abilities, rich features and functionality. The latest firmware, enables the D2 users to install new flash GUI skins. The variety of skins is wide, but as you can guess, the one that attracts most attention is the iPod Touch skin. Don’t get wrong, the D2 doesn’t support the cover flow feature of the iPod Touch.

    Archos To Connect With Dish Networks

    archos_605The 2 years partnership between Archos and Echostar, just answered a bill this week. Dish Network customers can transfer their favorite movies, shows and TV programs, directly from their Dish receiver to their Archos players, in record time or faster, thanks to a new Archos designated plugin. To do so, you have to be a Dish Network subscriber with a VIP722 or VIP622, and own Archos 605 or 705 multimedia player. This exciting connection enables to transfer content faster than real time, and take it to wherever you like.

    Archos 605 – Harry Potter Package

    Archos_Warner Following the Archos 605 Charlie Chaplin bundle, Archos signed on a new partnership with Warner Bros Entertainment, to distribute Harry Potter films through its Archos 605 WiFi players. The new package is expected to be available around xmas time.

    The Archos 605 Harry Potter limited edition will be equipped with 20GB of storage and the first 4 Harry Potter films:

    1. Harry Potter and the School of wizards.

    2. Harry Potter and the Chamber Of Secrets.

    3. Harry Potter and the Prisoner Of Azkaban.

    4. Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire.

    The fifth Harry Potter film, The Order Of The Phoenix, will be available to download via Archos Content Portal.

    Samsung Yepp P2 WiFi Extension

    Samsung created a new cradle extension to its Yepp P2 player, in order to expand the usability and attract more users to buy it, with the growing competition of the all-in-one media devices. The new cradle connects to the bottom of the player and equipped with WiFi connection, MicroSD slot, FM transmitter and a speaker. The Yepp P2 comes with 2GB & 4GB storage capacities.

    Archos Released New Widgets And Games

    Last week, Archos finally released the promised widgets pack for the 605 and the 705 PMP players. All you have to do is to download the widgets for free from Archos web site or through your Archos WiFi connection. Most of the new plugs are designed for the Opera web browser plugin (which costs 30$), but there are some extra flash plugins, available in the Opera web site, and can be used without the browser.

    In addition, Archos revealed 8 new, flash based games, divided to 2 packs of 4, with the price tag of 10$ each. We find those games to be unattractive considering the fact that you can find many of these available for free.

    Cowon A3 & Q5W Go Live In The US Next Week

    After long expectations and tons of speculations, the new line of PMP players, from Cowon, is going live in the US next week. The players are well equipped and Cowon squeezed into the A3 and Q5W almost every known audio and video formats, to increase the competition with the high rated Archos 605 players.

    Meizu M8 First Appearance On CES 2008

    We hear that Meizu might present its new M8 player on the next CES show in Vegas on January 2008. The player is, literally, an iPhone clone prototype, with aplenty of similar outside and inside interface look. The M8 has a 3 inch 16M TFT touchscreen and a 3 mega pixel camera. In addition, it will include WiFi, Bluetooth, TV Out, USB, USB OTG, GPS and more. A wide range of audio and video formats will be supported.

    Meizu M8 is expected to be available on February 08, in Asia. We wonder when will it be available in the US, since Apple’s attorneys are not planning to let this iPhone clone to be launched without an injunction.

    Also, Microsoft offers over 3 million songs, albums, DRM-free MP3s, music videos, audio/video podcasts and more, in the relaunched Zune Marketplace.

    Zune Original If that’s not enough, Microsoft created a free of charge, customized laser-engraved designs, available for people who purchase the new Zunes just at the beginning of sells. To choose from the collection of the new laser-engraved designs, you can log into the new Zune Originals store, and pick your new engraved design. Other option is to engrave up to three lines of text at your choice.

    The New Sansa View Player

    sansaview Sandisk released its new and updated portable player – The Sansa View. The player comes with a new shiny look, with 2 storage sizes – 8GB and 16GB. Prices are 149.99$ and 199.99$ respectively.

    The new Sansa View’s screen size has been increased to 2.4?, and It is much thinner (around 8.8 mm). Sandisk also upgraded the resolution to 320 x 240 pixels, and added support in WMV, MPEG4 and h.264 video formats.

    In addition, the previous control buttons have been replaced with a new scroll wheel, and a MicroSD memory card slot was added, along side the good old FM tuner. Battery life is set to 30 hours of audio and 6 hours of video (impressive).

    To conclude this, rumors coming from Sandisk directions, implies for even a bigger Sansa View storage capacity – 32GB(!) unit, expected to be retailed for 330$.

    TakeTV Sandisk finally announced on its new USB TV video player. The new Sansa presents an easy way to take your video from your PC to your TV, as simple as using a USB flash drive – just drag files to your TakeTV player, slip it into the TV cradle, and press play on the included remote.

    The TakeTV player comes with 2 sizes configuration: 4GB (100$) & 8GB (150$). The player supports DivX, xVid, MPEG-4 formats, with Resolution of up to 720×576, in 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios and a range of viewing modes.


    The New Zune 80 Interface

    Microsoft announced on the second generation of its Zune players, this week. The players present a very nice interface (reminds me the iRiver Clix 2 interface) and improved usability, compared to the first generation .

    Archos released, worldwide, its new fifth generation players, and they are already becoming one of the best portable players distractions money can buy.

    The New Zunes From Microsoft

    A year after releasing the new Zune player to the market, and a month after Apple released its new iPod players, Microsoft is announcing on the second generation of the Zune.

    The new Zunes have two main configurations – Hard Drive and Flash Drive players.

    Hard drive Zunes – The Zune 80 – comes with 80GB of storage. Screen size has increased to 3.2″, thats 2 inch more than the first generation. It is much thinner than the first one, and it will be available in black color.

    Flash Zunes – Zune 4 and Zune 8 – comes with 2 capacity storage: 4GB and 8GB respectively. This flash players, remind Apple’s first nano players, come with 1.8″ and will be available in red, black, pink and green colors.
