Toshiba Mini NB305 and NB505 Netbooks Officially Announced

It’s not just about tablets or smartphones these days, there’s also a very fine line of netbook devices getting released. And the latest in that “still-relevant” category is Toshiba’s ultra-portable series that includes the Mini NB505 and the Mini NB305 machines, both said to have 1GB of RAM, along with a 250GB hard drive, nice chiclet keyboard and Windows 7 Starter for the OS. However, while the Mini NB505 packs an Intel Atom N455 processor and runs for $300, the Mini NB305 which appears to be a bit more powerful, comes with a dual-core Atom N550 processor and costs eighty bucks more ($380). In addition to that, both versions will be offered in wide range of bright and vivid colors at your choice, so if netbooks are still your thing – go for it.

HP Mini 1103 “Business Netbook” Released

We’re not quite sure what the advantage is of launching a “business netbook” instead of a “regular” one, but frankly it really doesn’t matter as long as it gets the latest and greatest hardware around. And when it comes to netbooks, we basically talk about anything that is similar to HP’s recent Mini 1103 lineup, or in other words, a 10.1-inch display, paired with Intel Atom N455 / N475 processors, 1GB of RAM, six-cell battery and a 250GB hard drive. And given that it’s for “business” uses, you’ll also receive HP’s business applications (QuickSync and QuickWeb) along with your choice of Windows 7 Starter, SUSE Linux, or FreeDOS for the OS inside. Did we mention it’s only 299 bucks?

Samsung NF310 Netbook With Dual-Core Atom N550 Processor Announced

Samsung has just taken the wraps off its next 10.1-inch Atom N550 netbook. The 2.87 pounds unit, also known as the NF310, will reportedly feature Intel’s dual-core processor, along with a nine hours battery, and a Windows 7 Starter platform for the preloaded OS. And while you do get hopes by noticing the screen resolution is at 1366 x 768 and that the GMA 3150 graphics is much stronger than its predecessors, the rest of the specs, which apparently include an 802.11b/g/n WiFi connection, 1GB of DDR3 RAM, and 250GB of storage, will no doubt bring you right back down to earth when this $399 lappy goes live, somewhere this coming fall. Full PR after the break.

HP Mini 5103 With Optional 10.1-Inch Touchscreen Introduced

There’s no fanfare in here. No drum rolls or trumpets, none of that, just a tranquil 10.1-inch business netbook introduction of the Mini 5103, a Mini 5102 successor, that HP has recently announced. Basically, to get this one, you’ll have to pay at least €429 or somewhere around $565, that would officially grant you either Atom N455 or N475 processors, tucked with up to 320GB HDD (optional up to 128GB SSD), 2GB of RAM, Intel GMA 3150 for the graphics, 3 x USB 2.0 ports, gigabit ethernet, an SD card, WiFi b/g/n connectivity and 2MP camera, stuffed on the front. Besides that, for few bucks more, you get a chance to add an optional Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator, along with optional Bluetooth 2.1+EDR connectivity and this optional touchscreen display panel, instead of the basic structure form. Still no signs of a Stateside release at the moment, but cross fingers, it might just hit some beautiful US shores.

Update: Before one could say Jack Robinson, HP has already updated its “soon to be arrived” Mini 5103 netbooks lineup with Intel’s new dual-core Atom N550 processor, and is likely to offer it along the current Atom N455 and N475 alternatives. No other significant changes were made besides the CPU update.

ASUS EeePC 1015P and 1015PE Sprout Out Officially, Deliver Up To 13.5 Hours Of Battery Work

It’s all about battery life and longevity these days, especially when it comes to laptops and portable media devices. And Asus, more than anyone else in this industry, seems to understand it pretty well, otherwise, how can you explain these two 10.1-inch netbooks, EeePC 1015P and 1015PE, that recently announced with Pine Trail CPUs inside along with a massive 6-cell 63Wh battery pack delivering up to 13.5 hours of continuous work – now that’s a lot, isn’t it? Besides that, you get the usual components you’d probably expect to find in any other powerful netbooks available in the pond, including two gigs of RAM, 160GB to 320GB capacities to choose from, Windows 7 for the OS, WiFi, Bluetooth, built-in webcam and finally, Atom N450 processors. On that note, you should know that the difference between the two versions is essentially cosmetic. Price and availability are yet to be determined though.

Sony Vaio P Lineup Resurfaces With an Optical Touchpad and Accelerometer

Does anyone remember Sony’s revolutionary Vaio P series? It seems to be a forgotten word until lately for some reason. Only now, it finally gets the update it needed but it doesn’t hold a candle to the tablet’s eclectic experience, does it?  Thankfully, the 8-inch netbook (or mini laptop for that matter) we’ve come to know and love, is back with an optical touchpad built to both sides of the screen bezel – pad to the right and mouse buttons to the left – and an integrated accelerometer, to ease your internet surfing mission, as tilt means back and forward in pages while vertical mode makes it a lot more convenient to read your docs. Besides that it’s also expected to include a faster Intel Atom Z560 processor to boost things up, and make it out sometime this June with five new colorful flavors. Prices, regretfully, are yet to be determined while specs and Full PR announcement are just after the break. Stay tuned.

Update1: Turns out that VAIO P entry-level units will run for $799 in the US with Intel’s 1.6GHz Atom Z530 processor inside. Still no clue about other optional packages, but the price is definitely more attractive than expected.

Update2: The guys at ITMedia have already managed to take Sony’s Vaio P next-gen laptops to a comprehensive teardown session that unveiled the existence of Intel’s Silverthorne CPU inside, offered either in Z530 (1.6 GHz), Z550 (2Ghz) or Z560 (2.133 GHz) version, paired with one of three optional SSD capacities (64, 128 and 256GB), and most common connectivity modules, including Bluetooth, WiFi, 3G WWAN and even Wimax. Netbook news has published a lot of inside images, taken from close range, so click through and take a look.

Update3: Engadget’s Joanna Stern has tackled with Sony’s Vaio P second-gen laptop as well and you can watch her quick walkthrough video after the break.

Update4: According to Sony Japan Sony’s Vaio P second-gen can also be used as a wireless “Remote Keyboard” to your PS3 gaming console – neat, isn’t it? Of course it would drain your battery life quickly, but that’s one compromise against so many benefits.

Update5: And looks like Sony’s second-gen VAIO P is finally available for pre-order on the SonyStyle website, starting at $899.99 for the Atom Z530 processor, paired with 2GB of RAM, and a larger 128GB SSD. Shipping is slated to June 25th.

HP Mini 210 Gets New Fashionable Designs

HP Mini 210 has already been out for many months now, offering a 1.6GHz Atom N450 processor, paired with a Windows 7 Starter for the OS, Intel GMA 3150 graphics, 160/250GB storage capacities, WiFi, card reader and 1GB of RAM. However, while first Mini 210 netbook edition came with five different color varieties on top of the lid (amongst you’ll find matte silver, matte black, sonoma red, pacific blue or solid black), the new one is more of a fashion statement (if anything), with either crystal white or preppy pink crisscross patterns covering the hood, from bottom to top. In terms of specs, both version remain pretty much the same, as basic price starts at $355 and official debut is slated for June 15th. White style image  is after the break.

HP To Acquire Palm For 1.2 Billion Dollars

Hewlett-Packard has just announced that it would buy Palm for a staggering price of $1.2 billion dollars, roughly about $5.70 per share of common stock. The merge and acquisition, which are planned to close by July 31, can give the Palo Alto computer giant a great opportunity to get a bigger slice from the hot and trendy smartphones market, valued at $100bn alone and with annual rapid growth of 20% . HP executive vice president Todd Bradley said that “Palm’s innovative operating system provides an ideal platform to expand HP’s mobility strategy and create a unique HP experience spanning multiple mobile connected devices” and also added that “Between smartphones, slates, and potentially netbooks, there are a lot of opportunities here.” And he’s right, just think about the endless potential  possibilities of having Palm’s stunning WebOS integrated in HP’s future multi-touch devices, whether these are mobile phones, tablets or other portable machines – it’s HUGE and HP, in our opinion, has clearly taken a few significant steps in the right direction, especially now when strident voices, complaining about a sluggish HP Slate performance, start floating around – WebOS can definitely improve speed reaction dramatically –  and someone at the HP headquarters has probably figured this one pretty well. Brian Humphries, HP’s Senior Vice President of Strategy and Corporate Development quoted saying “our intent is to double down on WebOS”. That’s very important, considering the months of speculations where Palm was desperately looking for a buyer. And given the fact that HP is getting over 1500 patents that Palm currently owns (that probably has considerable value as well, isn’t it?), along with a very good team of young talented engineers and one relentless chairman and CEO, Jon Rubinstein, who is expected to remain with the company another few years long, this very complex deal that few months back, could easily have seemed impossible, can all of a sudden turn into a nice and promising bargain. PR announcement after the break.

Update: Digitimes says that HP Taiwan VP, Monty Wong has officially confirmed a webOS tablet to go live somewhere around October of this year. Stay tuned for more to come.

Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3s Sneaks Into The Thin and Light Netbooks World

We’ve already seen Lenovos’s new S10-3 netbooks lineup pass through the CES show in Vegas, back in January, but we’ve only just now been treated to the first proper piece of info about the company’s S10-3S device, which apparently includes the usual peek under the hood, but a whole new thin-and-light outfit from the outside. And while most usual S10-3 versions are measured at 1-inch thick, this one, on the other hand, is only .6-inches thin over 2.4 lbs. What’s more, the new version also offers Intel’s Atom N450 / N470 processors, 1GB of RAM, storage capacities ranged from 160GB and up to 320GB at your choice – and those interested, can now get the basic specs for $379 and not a penny more. ASUS Eee PC 1005PR Joins The Pack With Broadcom Crystal HD Onboard

Eee PC netbooks – if you think you’ve seen them all – think again, because right now, the way it looks we’re back to the “hard-to-follow” position, where new models with very similar names come out to the pond twice a day. A few weeks ago, it was Asus’ new lineup, including versions like 1016P, 1018P and 1015p that showed up in the wild, and now it’s the newly made Eee PC 1005PR that just got released and suppose to replace the four months old 1005PE device. What’s new, you’re asking? While shape and feel are pretty much the same, Graphics wise, it’s a whole new story with that 10.1-inch 1366×768 HD compatible display stuffed inside, powered by Broadcom’s Crystal HD accelerator that can easily run your high-def files. The rest of the specs is nothing to be shout off, but definitely descent: 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450, 1GB of RAM, and 320GB hard drive. Price and availability are yet to be determined. Stay tuned.

Update1: And looks like ASUS’ Eee PC 1005PR is now up for pre-order at Amazon (with all the good stuff included) for $399.99 only, which makes this HD compatible netbook pretty attractive for acquisition, in its 10-inch category. Ship dates haven’t been disclosed yet.

Samsung’s Go N315 Netbook To Get a Pine Trail Flavor

Samsung has already managed to catch our attention a year ago when first released its slick and lavish netbooks lineup, known as the Go series. But things, as you may know, change pretty fast these days and technology that appeared to be new and updated back then is no longer relevant. And going into the nitty gritty things, last year it was the Atom N270 that has shined and today it’s the Pine Trail flavor (AKA: Atom N450) that rise, and Samsung wise, we have the Go N315 machine that was recently released with no surprise. Price is at $429 which makes it a bit expensive if you want us to categorize, but still packs the latest specs and components we expected it would comprise. That includes the Atom N450 CPU, 1GB of RAM, Windows 7 Starter and Intel’s GMA 1350 graphics, that plays HD videos smooth at any size.

Apple’s iPad To Make Official Debut On April 3rd (Update: Now Available For Pre-Order)

Now it’s official, the tablet everyone’s been waiting for is due out on April 3rd with Apple to start taking non-3G iPad pre-orders a week from now, on March 12th. The official announcement, which was fully added after the break, states that slate fanboys from countries like Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK will get the option to shell out their cash and buy one (3G or non-3G model) at the same exact US date of release, in the first week of the fourth month, with prices starting at $499 for a 16GB WiFi enabled iPad, and up to $829 if you’re out for the 64GB with WiFi and 3G flavors. Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs says: “We’re excited for customers to get their hands on this magical and revolutionary product and connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before”, and we say “Bring it on baby!”

Update1: It’s here! Apple’s latest and greatest tablet, AKA iPad, is now available for pre-order. Shipping date is due to April 3, as mentioned, and customers will be limited up to 2 devices each. Happy raid!

Update2: First stock of Apple’s iPad devices is SOLD OUT! and it’s not that we’re surprised, but just in case you wanted to get one and missed the train, then April 12th, a little over a week, is your next chance to jump to your close station.

Update3: Don’t color us surprise here fellows, we weren’t falling out of our chairs when first heard the iSuppli team, who thoroughly broke down the 16GB iPad components into pieces, decisively claiming a grand total of $259.60 net worth – almost half the price charged by Apple in stores (which stands at $499). Now, it wouldn’t be fair to go and look at things this way, without including R&D plus overhead expenses, would it? In any case, we still think that people should know exactly what they’re paying for, either it’s a $95 screen, or $26.80 for the 1GHz A4 processor.

Apple iPad Tablet Officially Live Starting at $499

[tweetmeme]

It’s been a wild day with big news and one single product – The iPad. Yes guys, Apple’s tablet is officially out, no more rumors, no speculations, no overpriced ($999) guesses or foolish mockups, this time it’s for real, and it would cost only $499 (16GB), $599 (32GB) or $699 (64GB), courtesy of Cupertino. As is, it looks very sexy, only 0.5-inches thin and 1.5 pounds of weight. Display is almost ten inches wide, and to be more accurate, 9.7-inches. Screen resolution is basically like every usual netbook, 1024X768, but the screen itself, as you may have guessed, supports a capacitive multitouch usability, the kind you’d find in an iPhone. It has 802.11n wifi, Bluetooth, and in some models even a 3G cellular connectivity, that will run in AT&T and around the world for a monthly fee og either $14.99 (250MB data) or $29.99 (unlimited package). Steve jobs says they are all UNLOCKED and that the processor inside is powered by Apple’s custom designed A4 chipset (which is speculated to be an Arm Cortex 9 processor). Battery wise, Stevo claims a 10 hours of work and almost a month in standby mode, while UI is basically similar to the iPhone, only revamped to support browsing, emails, photos, video (including Youtube), music, games and ebooks on a larger scale.

Yes, Apple thinks that netbooks are slow and made of low quality, and that’s why they came up with a tablet, which frankly is an hybrid creation of the company’s iPhone and Mac in one single device. Naturally, it comes with a built-in accelerometer, the kind that lets you play top-notch shooting and high speed racing games, joystick free, and GPS system if you were asking, is also part of the deal, so navigation, satellite images and street view topography are now available on the go. Like any light and sophisticated machine, you can send emails, engage your contacts, surf the net and sync music with iTunes – and this is the time to mention it has a USB connector for that mission and other collaborative tasks you can think of. But the iPad, is not just for internet and multimedia consuming, it’s also for book reading, like Yahoo’s Kindle, only with colors. But that’s not all, because Apple like Apple developed an iBook app this purpose, and to make things profitable, there is an online store – just for books – starting today! So there you have it, an all-in-one media device with music, videos, almost 150k optional apps, personal office manager, ebook reader and almost endless usage possibilities. On the down side, it doesn’t have a camera inside and we haven’t seen any HDMI output to pump your vids. The bezel is too wide, there’s no flash supported and last but not least, no multitasking – NO MULTITASKING. Instead you can work on sheets, tables and charts, through iWork, that was tweaked by Apple’s teams to fit the iPad. Want it? this ain’t come free – $9.99.

Update1: There are also some optional accessories to buy, like a standalone dock or one that comes with a keyboard, a camera connection kit, or an iPad case. Checkout the Apple store for more on that.

Update2: The iPad supports wide range of codecs including H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats.

Update3: Here are the overall prices:

  • 16GB with WiFi: $499
  • 32GB with WiFi: $599
  • 64GB with WiFi: $699
  • 16GB with WiFi & 3G: $629
  • 32GB with WiFi & 3G: $729
  • 64GB with WiFi & 3G: $829

Update4: Apple have partnered with five major publishers, including Penguin, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, MacMillan and Hachett Book Group, to bring into your iPad color or B/W  content.

Update5: Apple PR announcement plus images plus video added after the break.

Microsoft To Release Recommended Windows 7 Specs For Netbooks

Already got yourself a new portable netbook device? Having  some thoughts about installing Windows 7 on it? Maybe you should hear  Redmond’s supportive opinion first, before replacing your already-existing XP version. According to Microsoft,  “small notebook” owners (netbook s) should be able to maximize their Windows 7 usability, once having a 10.2-inch display, together with 1GB of RAM, 250GB hard drive or 64GB SSD configuration inside their netbooks. Additionally, max specs should also include a single-core processor under 2GHz clock with no limitation at the “Touch” and “Graphics” spectrum . Mind you, these are maximum stats , so no one should really bother too much,  as most machines support those requirements out-of-the -box.  Nevertheless, working with Windows 7 for quite some time has brought us into the conclusion it’d be best getting at least 64GB hard drive before begining this new adventure.

The next month release will include a basic version with Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 10.2-inch 1024×600 display, a 3-cell battery and a 160GB hard drive, while the Pro model will pack a 6-cell battery, together with 2GB of RAM and gOS/Windows 7 systems onboard. Price wise, Australian fans should expect shelling out $499 AUD ($320 USD) or $549 AUD ($355 USD) respectively. Still no word whether this new series is about to hit US shores or some other parts of the world, in any case we welcome every new model to the the huge list of netbooks in our pile.
