4 Modern Smart Technologies For Your Home That’ll Make Your Life Easier

Most people have a lot to do in their daily lives: a 9-5 job, caring for kids, making dinner, cleaning the house, finding time for hobbies and extracurricular…some people even work two or more jobs to make ends meet!

Well, the good news is that you can streamline your daily life with smart home technology, and it is amazing! It’s trending in 2020 and becoming a staple of many home and kitchen appliances.  From the simple things in life, from turning your lights on and off or setting your alarm to the more complex voice activation and surveillance, smart home technology can do it all.

Here are four of the most popular modern smart home appliances.

Amazon Echo

The Amazon Echo is a Bluetooth smart speaker that features a familiar voice: Alexa, Amazon’s virtual assistant. You have easy access to the breadth of content on the internet if you need to look up recipes, gifts for your family, play your favorite YouTube video…whatever you need!

You can also integrate Alexa with your smart lighting system, Nest thermostat, cameras, and much more. We’ll go over more of these modern smart devices below. But before we do, here’s a cool way you can integrate your Alexa with other devices.

Pair Alexa with IFTTT, which stands for  If This Then That, and you’ll have increased functionality across the board. IFTTT allows you to connect your smart devices to one another, and automate all reminders, alerts and toggle chains (for lights, thermostats, and more).

The Echo family includes smart tablets and speakers as well that you can check out here.

Philips Hue Smart Lighting

Even something as simple as turning on and off your lightswitch can be made even simpler and automated. The Philips Hue Smart Lighting products allow you to change the intensity of your lights and the color! Sure, colorful lights aren’t a necessity for your home, but they can be a great surprise for your guests or a fun way to inject some life into a party.

At the very least, you can integrate the lights with your Google Assistant, Alexa, or IFTTT for incredible ease of use.

Check out Philips Hue Smart Lighting here.

Google Assistant

Like Alexa for Amazon, Google’s developed its own virtual assistant, Google Assistant. Google has incredible access to its own search engine data. This makes it tremendously powerful when it comes to assisting and alerting you and helping you get through your day more efficiently.

In October 2019, Perficient Digital conducted a study that showed that the Google Assistant answers more questions than Alexa, Siri, and other voice assistants – it’s also more accurate than its competitors. The Google Assistant was found to be about 90% accurate and uses natural language better than its rival Amazon Echo.

You can find the Google Assistant here.

Nest Thermostat

Rounding out this list is the Nest Thermostat. This smart thermostat works with most heating and cooling systems and allows you to control your thermostat from your smartphone! It will even automatically turn up and down your home’s temperature as you come home and leave. That way you only pay to heat or cool your home when you are there. It’s brilliant!

Not only that, but Google reports on their site that “Independent studies showed that Nest saved people an average of 10% to 12% on heating and 15% on cooling.” So you’re getting great savings and exceptional convenience!

With the Nest, you can ensure your home is comfortable, always.

Thanks for reading about four of the most popular smart home technologies. These products will bring you savings, convenience, and they’re great conversation starters. When was the last time you saw someone with red and green lights in their family room?

So, what are you waiting for? Enjoy the latest in home automation.

Nowadays, big data server compute is taken care by AWS Lambda, where the users are charged for when the code is running and compute is being utilized. Amazon Echo Vs. Google Home: Which Is Best?

Many of you will be thinking about buying a smart speaker. You may have read articles and looked at prices, but you’re left a bit confused when one person says they prefer the Amazon Echo and says Google Home is superior. This infographic from Half Price takes you through how the two compare in different areas.

Let’s look at the voice assistant feature and according to the infographic the Echo wins because of an extremely comprehensive skills category. Skills are essentially smartphone apps and can help you do things like learn a new word.

However, for music and movie playback, it looks as if the Home is the clear winner. It allows you to listen to audio from Google Play Music and of course YouTube. You can also stream music and movies to the speaker or even connect to other speakers in the house if you’re using a Chromecast.

The reality is that both devices are always improving, and it will be interesting to see how they develop over the next few years. Find out more in the infographic.

The Top 3 Best Tablets on the Market

When you’re ready to dish out some money for a new tablet, you obviously want to buy the best there is on the market. So, when time comes to buy, what should you look for? What are the best new models you can buy today? These are a few of the best tablets you can find on the market today, if you are ready to buy right now.

Amazon Fire
With a 1.3 GHZ processor, a 7” screen, and excellent picture resolution (1024*600 pixels) you won’t find many tablets at this smaller screen size which has such excellent colour contrast and resolution. Add in the very light weight of only 11 ounces and you can literally carry this thing around without even feeling it in a bag. The 8 GB built in storage, and Amazon OS are fast, and allows for added storage if you need it. Excellent touch screen, easy to use features, and a small, sleek, elegant design, make this a must have tablet, especially for such a low-price point in comparison to other top manufacturer names in the marketplace.

Surface Pro 4
This Microsoft tablet is another great option. It is sleek, has the unique kick stand design, detachable keyboard, lighted keys, and a very cool looking exterior. It features a larger screen size at 12.3” you can use it like a laptop, eliminating the need to own two devices. The 2.3 processor speed is extremely fast, so you won’t experience lag time or slow speeds, even if you are down or uploading, watching, or playing games, on the device. 1920×1200-pixel resolution also means sharper images, better depth perception, and great color disparity on screen. A bit pricey, but considering it can be a tablet as well as a laptop in one, it is a bundle and a great bargain.

iPad Pro 7
Apple has done it again. If you love large screen sizes, the 9.8” design is truly a great size you won’t find with many competitors on the market today. With the iOS operating system, you won’t be disappointed with speed, ability to browse the web, or do nearly anything (work or play) on this device. It is very responsive, has built in safety fingers (like fingerprint technology), and the 2048×1536-pixel resolution, makes it the very best, and provides the best screen resolution and image quality, regardless of what you plan on using the iPad to do. It is very thin, it is very light, and it comes from the most trusted developer in Apple.

A true must have device, but do consider the high price tag if you are comparing this with other Android based devices which are much cheaper in the price spectrum. The  iPad Pro7 can be very expensive depending on the model you go for. Luckily catalogue companies have started to provide different payment plans like buy now pay later, pay weekly, pay monthly. Over the past few years buying tablets on finance has become more and more popular due to the price of the product.

No matter what you are looking for when it comes to buying a new tablet, you have hundreds of options out there. For the budget shopper, for the high-end shopper, and for those who are in between, these are three great models to consider, which will offer great resolution, speeds, and quality, for the price point you can spend when purchasing a new tablet.

Amazon To Release New 6″ and 7″ Fire HD Entry-Level Tablets

Kindle-Fire-HD-6-HD-7-tablets

Budget tablet market begins to hot up, and no one seems to know that better than Amazon. The U.S e-commerce giant today announced two entry-level models for its Fire tablet line, making them the perfect purchase for holiday goers. The new series includes the Fire HD 6 (six-inches diagonal ) and Fire HD 7 (seven-inches diagonal), with both tablets featuring 1280 x 800 resolution displays, as well as 252 ppi and 216 ppi pixel densities respectively.

Amazon Vice President Peter Larsen said  the company is aiming at broadening their target audience but without compromising on quality in any way. “If you get down to those low price points, you start to trade stuff off,” he said. “We hear about it from customers all the time.”

Amazon-Fire-HD-7

The two Fire HDs are expected to run under Amazon’s own Fire OS 4 Sangria platform, paired with similar 1.5GHz quad-core processors under the lid (delivering three times much faster graphics processing than previous models) and with Dolby Digital Plus audio, as well as dual camera i.e. both rear and front facing camera for photography and video calls.

The HD 6 price will start at ONLY $99, while the HD 7 is priced as much as last year’s Fire HD model, at $139. Both are said to be available in five different colors, including black, white, fuchsia, cobalt blue and yellow, with shipping to begin in October and pre-orders to start today.

Amazon Unveils the Kindle Fire HDX 7 and 8.9-inch Tablets

The rumors were there floating all over the web and now the real deal has finally been revealed. Today Amazon has officially announced what we already knew – a new pair of Kindle Fire machines in 7 and 8.9-inch flavors. The new tablets are dubbed as Kindle Fire HDX and run on “Mojito” which is an updated version of the Kindle Fire 3.0 OS. The slate in both cases includes a powerful 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor under the hood, and double the RAM at 2GB. Both the sizes are available now for pre-order, with the 7 inch 16GB variant starting at $229 (they ship on October 15) and $329 for the LTE-supported version (will ship on November 14), whereas the 8.9-inch model will retail for $379 (shipping November 7) and $479 for the 4G LTE-version (to be available in December).

The differences between the two models is obviously the size, but the screen is of the same, an HDX display with an astonishing pixel density of 339 ppi and 4 million pixels plus 100% sRGB color accuracy, and dynamic image contrast. The tabets are effectively designed for high performance at very low power. And as a result, the tablets will feature 3x faster processor, 4x faster GPU and 2x the memory, with an All-Day battery life, capable delivering up to 11 hours of mixed use and 17 hours of reading.

The new Kindles are more attractive and better to look at or hold in your hand. For instance, the 8.9” Kindle Fire HDX weighs in only 13.2 ounces, about 34% lighter than last year’s model. In that regard, the new slabs are great for those who like to use them “naked” and show off the shiny little light bar on the back. However, if you want something to keep ’em in when travelling, Amazon is offering a few colorful Origami covers as well. The new covers can fold for both landscape and portrait viewing.

Both the 7” and 8.9” Kindle Fire HDX flavors boasts a front-facing HD camera for video calling, while the 8.9-inch variant also includes an 8MP shooter on the back. Still in the hardware department, the HDX tablets come standard with only one built-in micro-USB port. In addition, you’ll find a fine pair of stereo speakers, powered by the Dolby advanced audio technology.

More on the two new tablets, Amazon has also added a new and revolutionary Mayday button to its Quick Settings menu, enabling real-time video tech support. It’s free, and apparently will be available for customers 7 days a week, with activity around the clock. Nice!

As for the software, Amazon has added a new service called the Prime Instant Videos, which basically provides an offline viewing options for members who travel a lot. Amazon has also improved its X-Ray solution for music, by adding lyrics that let you follow along with songs. Karaoke style. On that same note, X-Ray for music and TV now shows a wide range of info, including the list of songs that play in the video, themes, titles, some interesting highlights, and more. The service is powered by the IMDb database, and can also provide a second screen streaming experience.

Finally, Amazon has also updated the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD with a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and a display that features 1 million pixels and a resolution of 1920×1200 pixels. This one will cost a mere $139 and scheduled to ship on October 2.

Alleged new Kindle Fire Photo Suggests New Design

While details are still scarce, word on the street is that Amazon is planning a new, updated Kindle Fire product range, with a particular focus on revamping the external design. If latest leaks from @evleaks prove to be true, the online retail giant is giving its tablets a complete makeover. Not only does it have a bit bigger and slightly curvier bezel around the screen, there is a notable omission of the front facing camera. Which may suggest that we are looking at a standard Kindle Fire version, and not necessarily the Fire HD, which was recently rumored to include a massive 2,560 x 1,600 display resolution, alongside a front 2MP webcam and an Android 4.2.2 for the OS. Other than that, the guys over at BGR claim that we should probably expect at least two different screen sizes (e,g 7, 8.9-inches) to show up in the next aforementioned line, with both models to feature a 2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor under the hood, 2GB of RAM and your choice of 16GB, 32GB or 64GB storage capacities. More details to follow soon.

Amazon Announces New 7-Inch and 8.9-Inch Kindle Fire HD Tablets

At  Santa Monica, Amazon reveals a new line of Kindle Fire tablets, set to go live in Q4 this year, with 20 percent of extra speed and some other screen resolution and sizes. Amazon announcements always make a big splash, and this year was no exception. Jeff Bezos, the CEO, creative force and founder of Amazon stepped on stage to introduce the world his latest and greatest Android-powered devices.

Besides a new iteration to the good ‘ol Kindle Fire device (which now offers a 7-inch screen, 1GB RAM, bigger battery, and 44 percent more powerful capabilities than the last), the company has launched a whole new Kindle Fire HD series to rival the more recent competition in the mini-tablet market.

First in that group is the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD flavor. A 1280 by 800 high-def resolution device, with 16GB of internal capacity, about 11 hours of battery life, an integrated WiFi and $199 retail cost (ships September 14).

Up next is the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD version, that boasts a 1920 by 1200 resolution, alongside a 1GB of RAM, WiFi with two antenna (dual-band MIMO technology), improved battery life results, and a TI OMAP 4470 processor (a Texas Instrument CPU claimed by Bezos to outperform the Tegra 3 Nvidia chip). If you look around the 8.8 millimeters slate, there are two speakers built into the chassis, as well as an HDMI input, and a laminated touch sensor. The 8.9-inch model priced at $299, and ships November 20th.

Last but not least, is the Kindle Fire 4G LTE, Amazon’s $499 tablet that sports a similar 8.9-inch full HD screen, alongside the TI OMAP 4470 CPU, and with 32 gigabytes of internal storage. Amazon is also giving away, as part of the deal, an AT&T data plan of $50 per year in exchange for 250 megabytes of monthly mobile internet data, when this release ships in November 20th.

Additional features on all models, include Whispersync for voice that syncs audio books and text e-books, FreeTime parental control app,  New email app with Exchange support, and X-Ray for movies that brings the power of IMDb directly to your tablets.

Hands on video after the break.

Update: The brand new Kindles are all now available for pre-order from Amazon.

Amazon’s 7-Inch Kindle Fire Tablet Officially Live: Only $199

We’ve heard the rumours, but now it’s official. Amazon just announced its latest and greatest 7-inch Kindle Fire tablet that will be sporting a powerful dual-core processor inside, along with a 3.5mm jack, 8GB of storage, micro USB hub and an Android platform for the operating system. The most anticipated device, which lacks 3G capabilities, is priced very competitively for such a high quality slab (only $199), and comes with  a 7-inch Gorilla-glass and an IPS panel touchscreen, paired with an integrated WiFi and a wide range of audio/video formats support. Software wise, you’ll be getting a 30-day trial of Amazon Prime, as well as full access to the Kindle books section, the Magazines, the Movies, the TV shows and of course, Google’s online Android Appstore. There’s also an option to connect your device to the big screen whenever you want, and last but certainly not least, Kindle Fire’s release date: November 15th, although we’d truly like to get our hands on it as quickly as possible and grab one for ourselves early before they hit all the stores. Make sure you check out the first commercial video plus full specifications after the break and please stay tuned for plenty stuff more.

Acer Aspire ICONIA TAB A100 Goes Up For Pre-Order, Ships on April 20

We’ve already heard a few interesting anecdotes about Acer’s 7-inch Iconia Tab tablet device, back in January of 2011, but only now (three months later) has it decided to finally unleash the Honeycomb slate, namely Iconia A100, into the wild and overcrowded market. As far as hardware goes, there are 5MP and 2MP megapixel cameras on board, along with a Tegra 2 processor, 512MB of RAM, WiFi (3G optional), Bluetooth connectivity and 8GB of internal storage capacity which are fairly reasonable but not enough for huge video files to load. In terms of price, the A100 may be considerably cheaper when compared to other devices in the category – only £299.99 (about $485) as it appears on Amazon.co.uk, with April 20th release date in the UK itself and later on all over the world. Good job, Acer.

Update1: And looks like the 7-inch ICONIA A100 tablet is now available for pre-order on Amazon UK with 3G WWAN capabilities attached and Android 3.0 running on board. Prices are at the £400 ($660)  range while shipping is due to May 14.

Update2: We’ve just added a quick hands-on video of Acer’s forthcoming Iconia TAB A100, courtesy of Steve Chippy. Check it out after the break.

Dell Streak 7 Finally Gets a $379 WiFi-Only Version

We’re not so sure how many of you would actually be quite happy to pay $450 for a brand new Dell Streak 7 off-contract, given the fact that iPad 2 will cost as much as $50 more. That being said, a WiFi only version of this Android Froyo tablet had been certified, earlier this week, and been listed on Amazon for a $379.99 pre-order – Which are $70 less than the 3G-enabled flavor, or $120 under apple’s latest and greatest second-gen tablet. Is that good enough? I’m thinking this price now will make it worth the purchase. Hit the jump to read the specs.

Update: Now officially shipping throughout the States.

LG Optimus Pad Gets a $699 Price Tag Stateside (Update: $529.99 on Contract)

The 8.9-inch Optimus Pad has already gone official, but its final price was yet to be determined. Now, a New York based online store called MobileCity, has finally listed it for a $699.99 early pre-order, with availability details still missing from the board. And even though we’re not sure of the price, it would probably be very expensive and not worth the buy compared to Apple’s $499 iPad 2 for example. The truth is that LG has actually managed to come up with something fairly fresh, and stuffed inside some really cool specs, including NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, 32GB of storage, a dual-camera array on the back with 3D video playback capabilities, and Google’s latest Android 3.0 Honeycomb platform preloaded on board. That been said, we’re still looking for that “prince charming” package, this durable and attractive device that will have us believe we can truly make the most out of it without spending so much dough.

Update: And if $700 is far too expensive for you to buy a Honeycomb tablet, fellow readers, there’s a new payment method that will set you back for $529.99 on a two-year contract (after a $100 mail-in-rebate). Wait a minute, is anyone convinced? A 2-year contract plus one time $530 fee? Ok, so it lets you record 3D videos, so what?  Maybe a wifi only version priced comparable to Ipad can do something – You hear that LG?

HP’s 9.7-inch Palm TouchPad Announced: 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon, Beats Audio engine and webOS 3.0 Platform

We’ve already seen a glimpse of what HP’s 9.7-inch Touchpad device looks like, and today it finally sees an official announcement. And while the tablet itself doesn’t break any design ground, the new webOS 3.0 platform is simply mind blowing. Weighing in at 1.6 pounds and measuring only 13.7mm thick, the Palm TouchPad, which used to be called Topaz, also includes a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, along with a very sharp  9.7-inch 1024 x 768 touchscreen display, an integrated gyroscope, accelerometer, your choice of 16/32GB of internal storage, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, A-GPS capabilities, and a 1.3MP front-facing camera, for audio/video conferencing support. Also, as far as music entertainment at this new Hewlett-Packard tablet goes, you get yourself a set of inbuilt stereo speakers, powered by HP’s own Beats audio engine that produces a  ‘Jump Smokers Sound’ that will make you dance, shake and rock.

Software wise, HP/Palm’s webOS 3.0 is beating everything easily so far. Generally speaking, it does kick Apple’s ass in some of the places, and certainly a lot nicer to use than any Android-powered devices we’ve ever had a chance to experience. Not only is the UI slick and geared toward public consumption, it is probably the only one out there to feature a true multitasking, to date (you hear that Apple?). Besides that, there’s a very cool email app preloaded inside, as well as a virtual keyboard, VPN capabilities, touch to share integration, wireless printing, and well established QuickOffice, Google Docs, Dropbox, and Box.net support.

Regretfully, price wasn’t announced yet (someone’s probably waiting for Apple to announce iPad 2 first) and the ship is set for this undetermined “coming this summer,” date…but that doesn’t mean we are any less excited, right?

While waiting, make sure you hit the jump to watch the video.

Update: We’ve just added another quick hands-on video, courtesy of TechnoBuffalo.

Think there’s a room for yet another Android tablet in your hearts? How about the latest 7-inch Android Froyo slate that Amazon is offering for pre-order at $370? No, it’s not as popular as Apple’s iPad or Samsung’s GalaxyTab but hey, it’s much cheaper than others and StreamTV , the company that has recently brought it Stateside, is promising a lot of goodies inside. And while it won’t come preloaded with Google apps on board, the slick 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreen device still worth a try. Why? Because it packs this powerful 1GHz Tegra II-720 processor that will run games and 1080p HD videos stutter free. Besides that, it also packs a front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera, an SD card slot, WiFi, USB and HDMI ports – isn’t that cool? The T-Mobile G1 event was definitely a game changer, to how the mobile phone and the Internet have merged to bring us innovative solutions in one device, the kind that can provide Email, Maps, Calendar, instant messaging, Contacts, Search engine and Media player, all together in one strong Open Source platform that will be able to compete those lavish smartphone handsets, with a fair and affordable price. As the clock pointed at 10:30 AM (East time), a group of distinguish representatives from companies like Deutsche Telecom, T-Mobile, HTC and Google were gathered on one small New York stage, to announce the long-awaited HTC Dream, powered with Google’s Android operating system, to be available in T-Mobile stores and dealers on October 27th, for merely $179, subjunctive to a two year contract – $25/month deal, including unlimited internet access plus a certain amount of messaging package, or $35/month deal with unlimited internet access and unlimited messages to send.

The new phone, also known as the G1, is equipped with a quadband GSM HSDPA 1700/2100, a stunning flip-out 3-inch 320 x 480 HVGA touchscreen, a full QWERTY keyboard to make it easier when you type-in a web address or any other online form, a 3.2MP camera with auto focus, a microSD card extension (1GB microSD card included, supports up to 8GB card), GPS navigation system, Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity. In addition, you get more applications pre-loaded, like Android Market, which is equivalent to Apple’s App Store, Amazon’s MP3 store, allowing to download from 6 million DRM-free tracks (starting at 89 cents), YouTube and many other third-party goodies onboard.
