Cowon Announces D20 MP3 Player With 90 Hour Battery Life

Alright, let’s start this off with a little confession: I own a Cowon mp3 player and I think it is simply the best. Far better than anything else I have ever had before (and I do have quite a lot of audio gear, you know). Better amp, better structure, better music handling features. Thing is, that most people I talk to today don’t even use mp3 players anymore – over time mobile phones have slowly taken their place. But for audiophiles, the mp3 player is a must have. Ultimately, that is why the South Korean corp is starting to market the D20, a 2.5-inch (320 x 240) digital audio device with either 8GB, 16GB or 32GB of internal storage at your choice, an integrated SD card slot, FM radio, voice recorder, TV output, and resistive touchscreen on top. But what is so special about it, you may ask? Put it simple, the battery part is very well planned, with 13 hours of video playback, and up to 90 hours(!) of music at your fingertips. 90 hours, sheesh. As for pricing? The Cowon D20 will sell for ¥11,800 ($125) and ¥16,800 ($178), respectively.

Cowon’s 4.3-inch X7 PMP is Now Out in Korea (Update: Also in Europe)

While some folks strangely cling to the belief that PMPs have gone obsolete, others hold on to the idea there is still a lot of untapped potential with this specific department. Well, mainly strong names like Cowon, that has recently launched a brand new player of its own. And it’s been pre-named for your convenience as Cowon X7, so if you’re planning on getting one, mind you it’d cost 339,000 KRW in local currency or about $304 in US silver coins. The 4.3-inch player which was designed explicitly to consume audio and video content will pack 160GB of storage and is allegedly capable of playing up to 10 hours of video playback or 103(!) hours when switched to audio mode. Besides that it will also include a Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity, and is said to deliver a very wide range of codecs support. Availability wise, the South Korean users will probably be able to get one immediately, but Western fanboys will likely have to wait just a little bit more.

Update: While still unavailable Stateside, the new 4.3-inch Cowon X7 player has apparently begun to show up in some European countries. With a built-in bluetooth connectivity on board but NO WiFi at all (shame), the 480 x 272 screen resolution PMP will run you in France for €299 (120GB) or €329 (160GB). Wanna see more? Best Buy Acquires Online Music Service Napster For $121M

Online digital music market is getting warmed up, as US retail giant, Best Buy, announces it will acquire Napser for an astonishing $121 million price tag. The transaction is set to be accomplished in Q4 of this year and we have no doubt it was carried out in order to try snatching a substantial share from iTunes’ market dominance. Napster allows its 708,000 subscribers to access an unlimited library of music or using the “Napster Mobile” platform, on their mobile phones, for a small monthly fee of $15. Having said that, the company has never turned a profit, during its long years of existence.

Best Buy president Brian Dunn confirms the company’s desire to expand Napster services and to use “Napster’s capabilities and digital subscriber base to reach new customers with an enhanced experience for exploring and selecting music and other digital entertainment products over an increasing array of devices.” Be sure it’s just the beginning and we expect more developments to take place in the near future. We do hope this move will increase the competition and at the end of the day, will be profitable for the consumers.

iTunes 8 officially goes live at Apple’s “Let Us Rock” event, introducing HD shows from ABC, NBC and Showtime, to run for $2.99 per episode (the rest priced at $1.99). In addition, the 8 version comes with the new “Genius” sidebar feature, which lets you automatically create playlists from songs in your music library that go great together. Meaning, iTunes has a smart music reccomendation tool that helps users to rediscover favorite songs in their existing music library and suggests related music on the iTunes Store they might want to add to their music collection (sort of Pandora like). Furthermore, you can visualy browse your iTunes’ music / video libraries, using your album or video cover art and enjoy some new stunning Magnetosphere visualizations, once you turn your favorite music on. I really like the new CD-T300 Pro, it has a unique illuminated “out of space” design and aluminum alloy body that turns it into a 2 ton heavy thing, well to be more accurate it weights “only” 24lbs, but you got the message – very heavy. The CD player is equipped with two remote controls, gold plated tube legs, and four amplification valves, but the most juicy piece of info is the $12,000 price tag, which makes the T300 unaffordable for most of us, so I guess I’d stay with the ipod after all.

PS3 Firmware Update 2.20 Enables Full Blu-ray 2.0 Capabilities

According to Sony, version 2.20, which is just days from launch, will feature Blu-ray spec 2.0 and BD-Live capabilities that include online downloading of video content, ringtones and interactive movies or audio. In addition, you will be able to copy to your PSP photos and music playlists via USB connection. The update will also add movies bookmarking function, so you can return back to the exact point and resume play from where you left off. Head To Head: Archos TV+ VS. Apple TV

The guys at Megawhat.tv have decided to make a comparison between the two leading multimedia boxes, the Archos TV+ and the Apple TV. This head to head video, examine both devices on different categories such as movies, photos, music, streaming, outputs, inputs, GUI and more. The results are not conclusive and pretty much let you decide for yourself, according to your personal needs and flavors. Personally i prefer Apple’s GUI but reluctant with their format limitations. The Chinese corporation, Newman, storms the market with plenty of new media players. Two of the latest are the Momo X2 and Momo X5 which remind us the Meizu M6 and M3 players.

iPod Firmware 1.1 Brings Electric Pulses To Your Ears

Firmware version 1.1 can be a dangerous escapade for iPod Classic owners, as we hear the headphones are getting damaged once the update is installed and the device is turned off. For some reason, the latest update sends electric pulses, up to 500mv, causing a real danger to the users and to their earbuds. I guess you should wait with this update until it gets fixed by Apple. If you ran out of patient and already installed it, you should dowgrade to an earlier version.

Samsung P2 Firmware Update 3.07 Goes Live

Samsung released the second part of the Blue Wave firmware update for P2 players. The first part unveiled Bluetooth support, enabling wireless file sharing with other supported devices and Bluetooth phone integration to handle cellphones via the players. The new 3.07 update version features the following:

  • Gui improvements, including 3D icons.
  • Radio music saving.
  • Album art view.
  • 3 games.
  • Video zooming.
  • Picture zooming and rotating.
  • Text rotating.

Archos TV+ Has DVR And WiFi Support

Archos released the Archos TV+, a stationary version of its Archos 605 portable media player. The TV+ is the first WiFi Digital Video Recorder that comes in 80GB or 250GB storage capacities. With the Archos TV+ you can schedule, record and stream content whenever you want, through your WiFi network. You can watch your favorite stored movies, listen to your music and flip between your last vacation photos, in a simple push of a button, from the living room couch. The device comes with a cool QWERTY remote, for a full control of the UI and the web surfing (thanks to the touch pad). It supports a video on-demand service, so you can order your favorite movies from CinemaNow, or watch any video through one of the video web services such as YouTube, DailyMotion and others. The TV+ has a USB 2.0 host, for an easy and direct access to your digital camera photos or your portable media player movies. In addition, it has an HDMI output, so you can plug it to your advanced LCD TV and watch high resolution movies. You can get one for $229 (80GB) or $349 (250GB).

iPhone Gets Voice Dialing Application

We’ve expected this one to show up, Makayama, a Netherlands based company, introduced a VOICE DIAL application for the iPhone. This application allows you to record voice samples for any contact in your address book and dial up your numbers, hands free, in all languages. You can even surf to your favorite websites by assigning voice tags to your Safari bookmarks. In order to add this app, you need a Jailbroken iPhone, then go to Installer > Sources > Add http://tinyurl.com/2t8cax. The Voice Dial is available for a free trial or a full release purchase, for $27.95.
