Toshiba Announces 10.1-Inch REGZA Tablet AT501

Toshiba-REGZA-Tablet-AT501

Toshiba has just announced a new joiner to its burgeoning Android tablet family, the REGZA Tablet AT501, which supposed to replace the previous AT500 model. The new device has the latest version of Google Android, under the hood, alongside a 1.3GHz Tegra 3 chip and 1GB of RAM. The screen measures 10.1 inches diagonally, but the pixel rate is only at 1,280 x 800 IPS. Famous for its TV line, Toshiba has also added to this slab, a nice feature that will enable you to use it as a cool companion to the popular REGZA series, at no time. And while battery is said to deliver up to 10 hours of continuous work, the camera on the back is a bit disappointing, at 3-megapixel only. But that’s what you get for the price of  40,000 yen, or $425, right?

Sharp’s Galapagos Media Tablets Officially Introduced

At this point it’s really hard to tell which is more accurate to describe Sharp’s new Galapagos lineup:  an e-reader, a tablet or maybe just an oversized phone (without a 3G connection, of course). One way or another, it’s going to cost us way too much – and to be even more specific, ¥39,800 ($475) and ¥54,800 ($655), for each of the two following versions that the Japanese corp is offering us – a 5.5-inch 1024 x 600 slate and a 10.8-inch 1366 x 800 tablet. And while we cannot be sure exactly what to expect or when we might actually see them out, this year or in the next one, there’s something inside us that tells us the story, which in Sharp’s case is, that we probably won’t see them live on our side of the pond.

Update1: Save the date: Friday, December 10 is when the Galapagos series will be officially released for trendy and most fashionable Japs.

Update2: According to a Mainichi Daily News report, Sharp is planning a big and techy refresh for its upcoming US Galapagos lineup. And when we say “refresh” we mean that the company is said to to include a few things that you probably won’t be able to find inside the Japanese models, such as 3G connectivity, global EPUB content format, and even a proprietary e-book store. Official release date is scheduled for early 2011, but chances are that we’ll find out about it next week at the CES show.

Onkyo To Release Three Windows 7 Slates

OH! What’s this, another Windows 7 slate? Apparently yes – not one, but three different flavors. The manufacturing company in this case is Onkyo, and the hardware that’s being offered is pretty much the same across the entire line of new Japanese tablets. Screen sizes are at 11.6-inch and 10.1-inch, both featuring capacitive touchscreen displays, and while the TW317A5 and TW217A5 versions get 32GB SSD, the TW117A4 goes traditionally with a 160GB HDD of storage. The software, as mentioned earlier, is a Windows 7 Premium and the inner chipset on board appears to be an Intel atom N450 processor. Pricing and availability details are still not available, but you can be sure that we’ll let you know as soon as we do.

So there’s not really much to say about NEC and its new seven-inch LifeTouch Android tablet, besides the fact it boasts an ARM Cortex A8 processor, runs an Android 2.1 OS under the lid and scheduled for release in Japan somewhere around October. Apparently, the new slate supports both landscape and portrait view (in case you’d like to read some e-books)  and said to arrive fully customized, mainly for enterprise purposes. Sharp’s 5-Inch NetWalker PC-T1 MID Announced

The world splits to two: from one hand, companies that produce slates and from the other, those who prefer calling them tablets – and then, there’s the MID which is kind of a hybrid creation of both species. I mean, just think about it for a second, why do we need a MID when “tablet” or “slate” will probably do good, eh? This way or another, Sharp’s new MID, NetWalker PC-T1, is coming our way this May, packing a 5-inch display that boasts netbooks’ 1024 x 600 screen resolution (Crazy!). Besides that, for a whopping ¥47,000 (about $510) price tag, you’ll get a Freescale i.MX515 processor, paired with one single USB port, MicroSD card slot, Bluetooth, 802.11b/g WiFi, and up to 6-hour of battery support. Software wise, it would run Ubuntu 9.04 as the OS, tucked with Anglo-Japanese dictionary and an e-book reader that would apparently have access to Sharp’s e-bookstore which includes over 25,000 titles to download. See you next month!

Hikari's Android-based iFrame Tablet Will Make The Japanese Scene Somewhere Next Year

Android is the key word in here, no doubt, but the tablet issue is no less important, and as you can see, we see a lot of them lately, better with an Android OS loaded onboard (it’s good for the marketing). And Japanese company, Hikari, is no different in that scene, realizing it should implement Google’s magical platform with its new iFrame tablet, which boasts (besides that Android power) a 7-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen display (that can be used as a photo frame) along with an SD slot expansion, WiFi connection, a built in speaker and multiple widgets like weather, calendar, news and recipes on top. Price range is claimed to be at $220 and $330 when this thing comes out in 2010. Until then, you can watch the video after the break.

Update: The guys at Akihabara news have managed to put their hands on one of those Android-based iFrame Tablets, which suppose to go live in Japan somewhere around March 2010. Hit this link to catch the action.

Asus' Eee PC 1005HA "Business Edition" Netbook Is Live In Japan

For many, the 1005HA is probably considered as one of the best netbooks available around, but that as a fact didn’t seem to stop Asus from launching another. The latest, recently emerged in Japan, was tagged as a “business edition” flavor, which frankly, has nothing exceptional inside. In any case, for $700(!) you get yourself an Atom N280 processor, tucked with a 10.1-inch display, 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, Windows XP Professional edition (no Windows 7?) and a 10.5 hours battery, for every single charge. Well, not exactly the best deal out there, is it?

Sony Vaio X Series Officially Announced, 11.1-Inch Display And 2GHz Intel Atom Processor Are In

It’s not a secret that Intel’s latest 2GHz Atom Processor is looking for new lavish netbooks to sit in, while making its way out to the market in the coming weeks. Now we’ve been told that Intel’s speedy CPU has finally found a fancy ultra-portable device to be accommodated, as Sony officially announces the Vaio X, an 11.1-inch netbook/notebook series that weighs only 1.6 pounds and made out of carbon-fiber materials. True, it ain’t going to be cheap, in fact you’ll have to pay a whopping $1499 – yes you’ve heard that right – one thousand four hundred and ninety nine dollars, that’s what you’ll be asked to shell out in order to get a slim Vaio X machine, including an Atom Z550 processor, tucked with an SSD drive, Windows 7  Home Premium edition, an integrated Verizon 3G slot and a 3.5-hour battery that is claimed to deliver up to 14 hours of work, in case you’re using the “super-extended” battery. Oh, and those of you who are crazy enough to buy one, will also receive a multitouch trackpad to flick and tap around – Duh.

Update: We’ve added an unboxing video of the Vaio X, made by the NewGadgets people, who were kind enough to share their first preview shots among the interweb geeks. In this video, you can see how thin the X series is and why Sony keeps hitting us with top notch machines. Truth to be told, price tag isn’t so friendly in this case, but that’d probably apply to many other products with such a lucrative design. Hard to tell if a Windows 7 was already included, but 3G modem and Intel’s new Atom Z540, are definitely inside. Hit the jump to see the demo.

Sony's PSP Go Surfaces Up Before Its Time (Update: Now Official – $249)

It’s not that we were totally surprised when Sony’s new gaming console abruptly showed up in a June 09 Qore edition – after all, rumors are floating around for quite some time – Yet, having a first look on a future portable gaming device can definitely rock our geeky heart, which barely stands the endless expectation for the official announcement to take place. And with so many neat features crammed inside, It shouldn’t take long until we snack ourselves a copy or two. But until we’ll manage to fulfill this dream, you all should probably like to know that Sony’s new PSP GO – as for on the go – seems to be offered with a 3.8-inch screen display, along with a built-in Bluetooth connectivity, rounded sleeky slider design and 16GB of internal Flash, expandable via Memory Stick Micro slot. Other essential traits to be noted include a smooth integration with PlayStation 3 gaming console (full network support), thin-and-light body design (43% lighter than PSP-3000), “10-year life-cycle products” guarantee (meaning long term viability) and various new action-game titles like Gran Turismo, Little Big Planet and Metal Gear Solid – in plan. With no pretensions to be crowned as a PSP-3000 successor and without determined price-tag given, all that’s left is a vague “This Fall” release announcement, which Sony executives were willing to share. Stay tuned for even more. Meanwhile, you can read the full PR announcement after the break.

Creative's Zen MX PMP Introduced In Japan

Creative is refreshing the lines, introducing a new Zen PMP which will go live in Japan on May 5th for ¥9,800 ($100) in case you’re into the 8GB model or ¥13,800 ($140) if 16GB will suit you better. Other than that, the Zen MX includes a 2.5-inch 320 x 240 display, a traditional SDHC expansion slot, and size that stands at 83.2 × 55 × 11.9mm, 66g. Different from previous Zen devices, this one can handle a limited codecs range, like MP3, WMA (DRM support), Audible 4, JPG, WMV, DivX and Creative’s own video-CMV format, so don’t expect miracles in this one for such a low price. On a different note, the company announces a substantial price cut in Zen X-Fi prices to make your recession just a little sweeter than it is right now — how thoughtful.

Kohjinsha's Atom MT Netbook Series Shows Up In Japan With TV Tuner Inside

Truth is we’re not very surprised to hear that Kohjinsha embedded a TV-tuner inside a netbook, after all we’ve already seen it when first introduced the Gachapin and Mukku thing, few months ago. That said, the new MT series the company has just launched, looks totally attractive and includes a 10.1-inch display, Atom N270 processor plus  ExpressCard 3/4 slot for 3G usage. Unfortunately, we’re not going to catch this one outside Japan, still for 49,800 yen ($513) you should expect getting a 3-in-1 card reader, WiFi b/g, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, VGA output with 1,920 x 1,080 upscaling capabilities and either 3-cell or 6-cell battery at your choice, so don’t bother waiting, there’s no scheduled release in other parts of the world — Sayonara.

Fujitsu's Modish Loox M Netbook Wants To Be Big In Japan (Update: Now M2010 Worldwide)

Another day, another netbook and yet again, the same usual specs we’ve all been singing back and forth, this time to the chorus of Fujitsu’s LooX M Atom device that includes a 1.6GHz N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, WiFi, Bluetooth, three USB 2.0 ports, multi-card reader and a webcam, hiding somewhere at the top. In terms of design however, the new Loox M is equipped with a breath of fresh air, coated in Red or White flavors, featuring sort of “infinite” mark and an expropriated price which stands at ¥59,800 ($611) in Japan.

Update1: Turns out Fujitsu just got official with the LooX M in some other parts of the world, this time branded as M2010, which packs the same specs we’ve already noted above, but with some new surprising goodies bundled inside, like wireless mouse and a DVD burner (probably external), that make this deal more attractive than ever.

Update2: Apparently, Fujitsu’s M2010 netbook edition is finally available Stateside, with a 3-cell battery (6-cell optional for extra $129), and a $450 price tag. Other than that, you get pretty much the same usual specs, which makes the M2010 a little pricey. You can find it in here.

But the new Mebius PC-NJ70A is no different from the others, actually it packs exactly the same elements we’re already fed up with, only this time Sharp had shown some creativity all over the place, by adding a small integrated 854 x 480 LCD (equipped with a light sensor) right into the trackpad, allowing people to use it as an alternative screen for tweaks, adjustments and some other interface managements, which consistently demand second screen, and while there’s no official announcement concerning availability, you’ll have to settle with the rumors around the websphere, claiming this innovative device will cost around  ¥80,000 ($817) across the Japanese market.

Kohjinsha To Launch a "Gachapin & Mukku" Netbook Edition

For many of us, Gachapin (Dinosaur) and Mukku (Bigfoot) are totally strangers, but for the vast majority of Japanese kids they are huge TV stars, that conquer their screens for long hours. To leverage these characters, Kohjinsha and Bandai Creation have decided to bring the two into an ML-based netbook edition, boasting a vivid green chassis, combined with a whitish keyboard. Other than that, it’s just another regular netbook with Intel ATOM N270 processor inside, 1GB of RAM, 160GB HDD, 8.9-inch 1024 x 600 display, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, WiFi connection and the usual outputs. Interestingly, this new device will sport a 1Seg Digital TV Tuner, to let the children watch their heroes on the new lappy, rather than your telly. Still no word about price or availability but we like the idea of teenagers hanging with netbooks, instead of just books.

Update: Shockingly, you’ll have to spend ¥79,800 ($866) in order to get this one for your kids.

Fujitsu Japan Introduces The Loox U 5.6" UMPC

Japanese corporation Fujitsu has announced the release of two Loox U ultra portable laptops, carrying a WXVGA 5.6-inch 1280 × 800 display and XP Home Edition onboard. Both U/C40 and U/C30 models pack 1GB of RAM, 60GB/120GB HDD storage, a 1.3MP webcam, an SD slot, WiFi connectivity, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, and even an FM tuner. The only difference between the two is within the processors, while the Loox C30 houses an Intel Atom Z520 (1.33GHz), its sibling, the Loox C40 is powered by an Atom Z530 (1.60GHZ). Despite the minuscule sizes (weight 565g), the battery will be able to provide up to 5 hours of work and the swiveling screen looks awesome. Unfortunately, our premature felicity turned down when the airy prices popped up, standing at 740€ ($1014) and 820€ ($1124), respectively.

Update: April 28 – Looks like Fujitsu has tossed in Intel’s Atom Z550 (2GHz) into the pack and called it FMV LU C50N UMPC, which is literally the Japanese version to the aforementioned UMPC. Besides the stronger processor, you also get a 5.6-inch 1280 x 800 touchscreen and the usual stuff you’ve already seen before.
