Archos Rolls Out Arnova 8 and 10 Android 2.1 Tablets

A known fact is that high-end tablets such as the Apple iPad or the Motorola Xoom are by far the most popular technology headline figures nowadays, but keep in mind there are also some lower cost devices that still make it out into this overcrowded sphere, and frankly speaking, they’re getting better and better every day. Such new arrivals, like the Archos Arnova 8 and Arnova 10 are enjoying the benefit of a market that is growing stable and somewhat predictable, in terms of who’s dominant and who’s the average player. That being said, you can still get affordable and quality in the same sentence, and that’s exactly what these companies (like Archos) are aiming for, aren’t they? In general, the two cheap Archos slates, which had already received approval from FCC to operate within the States, boast a 600MHz Rockchip RK2818 processor, paired with a USB 2.0 hub, MicroSD slot expansion, WiFi, inbuilt accelerometer, integrated speakers, resistive touchscreen displays, sized 8-inch and 10-inch respectively, and last but not least, a preloaded Android 2.1 platform, also known as Eclair. Storage capacities are at 4GB and 8GB only, but that’s what you basically get for paying 150 and 199 US dollars, or just under $350 for the pair. In addition to the above, the French corp is planning to release a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 Rockchip RK 2918 version with a more convenient capacitive touchscreen, sometime this April, for roughly the same amount of dough. And till then you can definitely dig in the two hands-on videos after the break.

Enspert Identity Tab E301 Android Tablet Officially Out In South Korea

In the inevitable storm of Android tablets set to rain down on us this coming year, one thing’s for sure: it won’t be easy for smaller manufacturers to distinguish themselves apart. Not to mention creating a buzz. But that doesn’t mean we won’t see them, right? Right. Korean Enspert, for instance, is a good way to illustrate our thoughts, because most people have probably never heard of them before, and yet thankfully, it didn’t stop them from launching an Android tablet of their own. And if you’re still reading, here’s what the company’s 7-inch Identity Tab E301 slate (yep, that’s the full name) is going to boast: Generally speaking, we’re looking at a $350 tablet with 1024 x 600 capacitive touchscreen resolution, alongside a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 CPU, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of internal flash storage, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, a mini USB hub, and HDMI port. In a first move, the Asian corp says it has already started selling its latest and greatest merchandise locally, while US invasion is expected to take place in cooperation with a major wireless carrier during a back-to-school launch, in the coming months or so. And while you’re waiting, make sure you check out the quick hands-on preview along with the full PR announcement, half past the break.

Update: There seems to be one or more than one Identity Tab models out there, as it would appear on a recent pre-order page that has recently emerged at  Dynamism‘s online store. Cowon D3 Plenue Is The New Android PMP On The Block

Say hi to the new Cowon D3 Plenue: At first sight, it looks like a basic mobile phone, same size, same shape, same overall appearance. But beneath the 3.7-inch, 800 x 480 AMOLED face lies an Android 2.1 PMP with 32GB of storage, SD card expansion, a built-in accelerometer and a T-DMB tuner. And if it wasn’t already cool enough, it also comes with an HDMI output, WiFi connectivity and Bluetooth 3.0 support. Sadly, we’re still not sure whether it is going to include an Android Market access at this stage – though we’re surely going to see some sort of applications on board – but one thing’s for sure, you can definitely expect to hear more about it in the coming months, weeks or perhaps in early January, at the 2011 CES show. Stay tuned.

Update: Amazon has just now listed a pre-order page for Cowon’s latest and greatest Android D3 Plenue player, priced at $370 and set on an undetermined release date. Is it just us that think this is way too much for a player, at this point?

Archos 32 Tablet gets Android Market Hack

It was just a matter of time before somebody would pick up the gauntlet and put an Android Market access into the Archos 32 (and maybe some other devices) platform. Nothing official in here yet, but looks like one of Archosfans forum members has finally managed to hack the Android system, and tweak one of its files, the gApps4Archos.apk, in a way that should let you all free and direct access to Google’s app and Marketplace store. Mind you, it requires the latest 1.0.70 firmware installed, and the good news – it actually works!

And while licensing issues prevent users from getting access to Android Market or Google Apps, there seems to be plenty of gadgets-junkies willing to pay the price – which according to various sources ranged from $300 to $400 before it gets subsidized. What else in there? 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G connectivity and 5mp camera are all included inside. Availability is yet to be determined (somewhere around Q1 2011), but a quick hands-on video is just after the jump.

i-Station Z3D Android Tablet is Said To Have 3D Viewing Support

We’re not ruling out the possibility of a 3D tablet device coming out to the most trendy and rapidly burgeoning pond – We really don’t! But the sad thing about this latest 3D technology is that it’s the one technology that is probably incapable of displaying good video quality and showing it properly to the people who are asking to watch – especially when it comes to one of those small and portable media machines, you might wanna own. Having said that, Korea’s i-Station would love to show you its next 7-inch (800×480) Z3D 3D slate box which apparently includes an Android 2.1 platform and enables 3D content viewing along both 802.11b/g WiFi, and Bluetooth 2.0 support. It offers either 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, paired with a local DMB-TV tuner, FM radio, 5000mAh of battery pack and either piano black or pearl white flavors to pick at your choice. If you’re interested, start counting KRW600,000 or about $500, when this thing comes out in Asia somewhere around November and not a single day before.

Dell Streak Caught On Video Running Android 2.1 OS

While Dell is still being elusive when it comes to when we will be able to pick up its wonderful 5-inch Android-based tablet/phone device from local US retail stores, Dell’s Kevin Andrew has taken the burgeoning conversation into the vids and uploaded a Youtube vlog where he talks openly about the Streak and demos the Android 2.1 platform running with Dell’s customized build, in front of the camera. Hopefully, it would go on retail (somewhere this summer) running Froyo 2.2 inside and painted with cherry red colors from the outside, but at the meantime, until it happens, you’ll have to settle with your Android 1.6 version (if you happen to have a Dell Streak machine already) and the 2.1 flavor presented on the web.

On a different note, we hear that Dell will be offering the Streak in the US for $299.99 with a two-year contract at AT&T or $549.99, free of any obligations. Checkout the video after the break.

Update1: Guess what? Dell is officially going to start selling the 5-inch Streak In the US, through AT&T, coming this Friday morning. How much? $299 with a 2 years contract or $549.99 in case you prefer the “no obligation” relations. We are still to confirm whether it would sell with the usual Android 1.6 platform, an Android 2.1 or anything better (AKA: Froyo). PR after the break.

Update2: I guess it was too good to be true. Turns out the aforementioned $549 off-contract version is…how should we say, not exactly unlocked as some of you might have thought. According to official Dell sources the “free” Dell Streak tablet, “will not be SIM unlocked”, which means you stay connected to AT&T whether you buy the more-expensive version or not.

Update3: And if you can’t wait anymore for Dell’s official Android 2.1 update to come out, you can download it, at your own risk, from this address – apparently, it works! Otherwise, you can downgrade back to the good ol’ Android 1.6 flavor from here.

Augen’s 7-Inch Android Tablet To Be Released Stateside For $150

Oh snap! what’s this? A 7-inch tablet which runs an Android 2.1 OS with a ridiculously low US$150 price tag? That is exactly what the new Augen slate offers. Still not available on shelves (try next week), this nice sleek Florida-based Android machine packs whatever you might need to operate your day-to-day tasks, for a fairly reasonable price. Naturally you shouldn’t expect much, considering the price, but given the fact you’re going to get a WiFi connection, 2GB of storage, 256MB of RAM, and a 7-inch resistive (and hopefully responsive) touchscreen in return – this deal looks pretty attractive for us, isn’t it?

Update1: Engadget’s Joanna Stern has managed to put her hands on one of these 7-inch plastic-made Augen Gentouch 78 devices and you can take a look at the quick hands-on video preview after the break.

Update2: If you still have a chance to get one of Augen’s new Android tablet machines from local Kmart stores, – just do it – Otherwise, let it go, because the next batch apparently won’t include Google’s apps preloaded inside. Why, you’re asking? Because the company didn’t have any Mountain View permission to load them up to its latest 7-inch tablets lineup and Google probably didn’t like it. That said, both companies are working together to make sure that future products will have secured rights to make them run. PR after the break

The second one, the T7-3G, which boasts pretty much the same impressive components that basic T7 model would offer, adds a cellular connection to its line of features and said to be valued at ¥1,880 (about $280) for the EVDO version and ¥1,980 (about $29o) for the WCDMA style. Toshiba’s 10.1-Inch AC100 Smartbook is All About The Android

Toshiba is coming on strong lately with all sorts of awesomely great netbook devices. And while most models still run a Microsoft Windows OS inside, the latest, AC100 Smartbook, is said to include an Android 2.1 for a change. The Japanese are probably the first to enjoy this bad boy, somewhere around August, as prices start at ¥40,000 and climb up to ¥50,000 or $440 to $550, respectively. In exchange for the money, Toshiba has stuffed a very interesting lineup inside, which apparently includes a 10.1-inch 1,024 x 600 pixels LED backlight displayed, paired with a 32GB SSD, 512MB of DDR2 memory, a 1.3mp webcam, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth, an HDMI output to pump vids on your tele, and last but not least, a fairly strong 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 250 processor, to make your 1080p content run stutter free. PR and video, just after the break.

Update: Battery is claimed to deliver up to 7 hours of continuous work and and 7 days of standby. Pretty impressive, isn’t it?

MSI WindPad 100 And 110 Spoted Live n Kickin’ at Computex 2010

It’s been a long time since we’ve last seen a real MSI tablet in action, but that (as a fact) doesn’t necessarily mean the Chinese corp has stopped manufacturing. On the contrary, it has just introduced two of its brand new 10-inch tablets at the Computex show in Taipei. The first model, WindPad 110, is powered by an Android 2.1 OS, and seems to be capable of handling high-def content pretty well, thanks to NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 processor on board. The touchscreen is capacitive and very responsive if you wondered, and the chassis itself includes a USB port and video output as well. The tablet will sell for $399 by the end of this year.

Heading to the second version, the WindPad 100 (which we’ve already seen a while ago), this one runs a Windows 7 Premium platform, while specs wise, it packs a 1.66GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor, paired with 2GB of RAM, 32GB SSD, two USB ports, an HDMI output, built-in webcam and finally, a special Wind Touch UI which MSI has literally stuffed on top of Microsoft’s coat. The WinPad 100 is set for release later this year for about $499 – hundred dollars more.

Update: Now official. Prices are at $399 for the U110 and $499 for the U100. Availability is yet to be determined.

This time it’s the newly born Aigo N700 (also branded as Compal NAZ-10), a 7-inch 800 x 480 multitouch machine, powered by Google’s Android 2.1 platform running with a powerful 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor inside and priced attractively, at $300 only. This handsome piece of craft plays 1080p videos stater-free thanks to Nvidia’s Tegra 2 graphics chipset planted within its bowels, along an HDMI output to pump vids out or the 4/16/32GB capacities you can choose from, to store things onboard. Other than that, it packs a microSD slot expansion, a USB port, WiFi, optional 3G WWAN connection and what appears to be a nice tiny webcam, built to the the left, on front. No idea whether it would go outside the Chinese boundaries, but it sure looks like a great device that can definitely rock.

Dell’s 7-Inch Looking Glass Tablet Unveiled, Coming Up In November With Tegra 2 Inside

Well, hello there…what do we have in here, a new tablet from Dell? I mean don’t get us wrong here, it’s not that we haven’t heard anything about it before, but this time it gets a lot more juicy details to share. First and foremost is the name – Looking Glass – which its creator apparently chose because of the glossy 7-inch display the tablet boasts. Screen resolution, BTW, is at 800×480 pixels only, which is kind of surprising, considering that Dell’s 5-inch Streak technically packs the same numbers. Still, you can’t go wrong when it comes to an android 2.1 machine, powered by Nvidia’s powerful Tegra 2 processor, can you? And if that wasn’t enough, how about 4GB of RAM, paired with a 1.3mp camera, an optional ATSC/DVB-T TV tuner, and 4GB of internal storage, expandable up to 32GB via an SDHC slot, that Dell plans to include inside – pretty cool, isn’t it? Unfortunately it is not due out until November of this year, so right now, you’ll have to settle with the line of specs, after the break.

Google Nexus One Update Is Over-the-air, Brings Google Goggles, Maps And Multitouch Capabilities Into The Phone

[tweetmeme]

The mystery behind Nexus One’s multitouch disparity between Europe and the US is finally about to end, as Google reports in its blog, suggesting imminent roll out of a software update, specifically tailored for the Nexus One and which apparently boasts some major add-ons inside, amongst you’ll find Google Goggle app that lets you take pictures through the integrated webcam and then generate search results about them, improved version of Google Maps with a special night mode and useful suggestions, general fix of 3G connectivity and last but probably the most important one, multitouch support, that would likely offer “a new pinch-to-zoom mechanism in the phone’s Browser, Gallery and Maps applications”. In case you were wondering about the timing of this update, here’s Google official statement, given to ReadWriteWeb:

Looking around the mobile industry, from Apple to Palm to HTC and Motorola – it’s clear that pinch-to-zoom technology has become a standard and popular way for users to interact with their mobile phones. Likewise, Android users can now truly benefit from this capability with the availability of Android 2.1, which powers a new class of devices with larger touchscreens and more interactive features. Unlike past devices, these phones have the processing power to deliver pinch-to-zoom, while still providing a great user experience. Based on these new capabilities and numerous requests from Android users, we decided to provide pinch-to-zoom capabilities with this new over-the-air software update for Nexus One devices.

Update: We’ve added a video that shows Nexus One new features in action, check it out after the break.

Google's Nexus One Officially Announced With Android 2.1 Preloaded Inside

So Google has finally launched the most anticipated Nexus One, and if you happen to live in one of the following 4 countries – the US, UK, Singapore or Hong Kong – you can get it right away from Google’s website, priced at $529.99 without a contract or merely $179 including a T-Mobile two year plan (in the US). Other people will have to wait at least until Spring 2010, when it believes that Google will be adding more countries to its smartphone lineup. The phone itself is an HTC brand, coming with a 3.7-inch 800×480 AMOLED display, which regretfully doesn’t support multi-touch at the moment, although Google says it’s not an hardware issue but a software tweak and it’d consider adding screen gestures capabilities in the future. Besides that, you get a fast 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, paired with a 5 megapixels camera including an integrated LED flash that can shoot MPEG-4 video and have it uploaded directly to Youtube. Additionally, this 11.5mm thick device has a built-in compass, GPS, WiFi, A2DP stereo Bluetooth, 3.5mm headphone jack, a multicolored LED under the trackball, an accelerometer for landscape view and two mics, positioned on front, for complete noise cancellation. It runs all common frequencies and compatible with HSDPA 7.2Mbps, UMTS Band 1/4/8 (2100/AWS/900), HSUPA 2Mbps and of course, GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz). The 1400mAH battery inside is claimed to provide 5 hours of 3G browsing and 7 hours of 3G talk time, while storage wise, you receive only 512MB of internal flash along with a 4GB micro SD card, expandable up to 32GB. See the full specs here.

Moving forward with the details, the Nexus One packs Google’s “latest greatest” Android 2.1 platform – also known as Eclair – which crams some nifty stuff inside, like the voice recognition feature that works throughout the entire UI and activates almost any feature in the phone. That way, you can use your voice to write SMS messages and notes (speech-to-text), or tell the Google Earth search engine where should it go. Other than that, Google has implemented a Cooliris technology into the Nexus One gallery app, so you get 3D visualization whenever looking at images in landscape mode. It has a lot of widgets to offer, such as weather and news RSS, and the smartphone’s homescreen customization is interactive and houses 5 panels to store your apps and shortcuts. Stay tuned. Video is right after the break.

Update1: And looks like Adobe is now jumping on Google’s bandwagon by demoing its Flash 10.1 beta on a Nexus One superphone. Check it out after the break.

Update2: Well, what do you know, the European version of Nexus One, apparently supports multitouch capabilities out-of-the-box, while US devices don’t. We’re not so sure why, but as someone suggested, the trigger for the abyssal differences might be the fact that Apple has a US Patent on multitouch which doesn’t apply on European countries. Maybe. Google says it’s carefully reviewing this issue at the moment.

Update3: Different from what has been reported, Google’s Nexus One seems to be incompatible with “n” draft wireless connectivityand official specs state it supports only 802.11b/g WiFi frequencies. We’ll have more about this soon.

Update4: You knew it had to happen sooner or later, did you? No? then get this – iFixit guys have taken Google’s Nexus One on a mission and disassembled it into small pieces of technology craft. See the results here and after the break.

Update5: We’ve added two more stunning videos right after the break, in which you can watch Nexus One’s manufacturing process with stress tests such as bending, slamming, dropping, and cracking, all over the place. A must see creation!

Update6: Turns out Google now has live person phone support in case your Nexus One has problems that need to be solved. It’s 888-48NEXUS (63987) and said to work from 07:00am to 10:00pm PST. Right now the line will handle only status and shipping issues while tech problems can find answer via Google’s support forums, FAQs pages, email support and HTC/ T-Mobile customer care departments.
