Everything Apple announced at the ‘Spring Loaded’ Event: New iMac and iPad, AirTags and More

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA, Apple officially announced some new and fascinating products at its “Spring Loaded” event last night. If you haven’t been following along with the rumors, here’s a quick recap of everything that Apple introduced: A new iPad Pro 2021 with M1 chip and XDR display, a new iMac desktop with colorful design and M1 chip, next generation Apple TV 4K with Siri remote, and AirTags.

Apple Event — April 20

Apple AirTags

Apple today introduced AirTag, a small and elegantly designed accessory that helps keep track of and find the items that matter most with Apple’s Find My app. Whether attached to a handbag, keys, backpack, or other items, AirTag taps into the vast, global Find My network1 and can help locate a lost item, all while keeping location data private and anonymous with end-to-end encryption. AirTag can be purchased in one and four packs for just $29 and $99, respectively, and will be available beginning Friday, April 30

All-new iMac With M1 Chip

Apple today introduced an all-new iMac featuring a much more compact and remarkably thin design, enabled by the M1 chip. The new iMac offers powerful performance in a design that’s just 11.5 millimeters thin, with a striking side profile that practically disappears. Available in an array of vibrant colors to match a user’s personal style and brighten any space, iMac features a 24-inch 4.5K Retina display with 11.3 million pixels, 500 nits of brightness, and over a billion colors, delivering a brilliant and vivid viewing experience.

The new iMac also includes a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, studio-quality mics, and a six-speaker sound system — the best camera and audio ever in a Mac. Also, Touch ID comes to iMac for the first time, making it easier than ever to securely log in, make purchases with Apple Pay, or switch user profiles with the touch of a finger. Combining the power and performance of M1 and macOS Big Sur, apps launch with blazing speed, everyday tasks feel incredibly fast and fluid, and demanding workloads like editing 4K video and working with huge images are faster than ever. The new iMac joins the incredible family of Mac models powered by M1, including MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini, marking another step forward in Apple’s transition to Apple silicon. iMac is the most personal, powerful, capable, and fun it has ever been, and customers can order it beginning Friday, April 30. iMac will be available in the second half of May.

New iPad Pros With M1 Chip

Apple today announced the most powerful and advanced iPad Pro ever, pushing the limits of what’s possible on iPad. The addition of the Apple-designed M1 chip delivers a massive leap in performance, making iPad Pro the fastest device of its kind. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro features a new Liquid Retina XDR display that brings extreme dynamic range to iPad Pro, offering a stunning visual experience with more true-to-life details to the most demanding HDR workflows. Cellular models with 5G deliver even faster wireless connectivity when on the go, and to provide users with pro-level throughput for high-speed accessories, iPad Pro now includes support for Thunderbolt. Additionally, an all-new Ultra Wide front camera enables Center Stage, a new feature that automatically keeps users perfectly framed for even more engaging video calls. The new iPad Pro is available to order beginning Friday, April 30, on apple.com, and will be available in the second half of May.

The breakthrough M1 chip takes the industry-leading performance of iPad Pro to an entirely new level. The 8-core CPU design features the world’s fastest CPU cores in low-power silicon — delivering up to 50 percent faster CPU performance than A12Z Bionic. The 8-core GPU is in a class of its own, delivering up to 40 percent faster GPU performance. This combination of CPU and graphics performance on iPad Pro widens its lead as the fastest device of its kind. Powerful custom technologies, including a next-generation 16-core Apple Neural Engine, an advanced image signal processor (ISP), a unified, high-bandwidth memory architecture with up to 16GB of memory, 2x faster storage, and up to 2TB capacity, make iPad Pro more capable than ever. The industry-leading power efficiency of M1 enables all of that amazing performance along with all-day battery life in the thin and light design of iPad Pro.1 Because M1 shares the same fundamental architecture of A-series chips, iPadOS is already optimized to take full advantage of the powerful technologies in M1 to easily handle everything from simple navigation to the most demanding workflows.

Next-gen Apple TV 4K

Apple today announced the next generation of Apple TV 4K, delivering high frame rate HDR with Dolby Vision and connecting customers to their favorite content with the highest quality. At the heart of the new Apple TV 4K is the A12 Bionic chip that provides a significant boost in graphics performance, video decoding, and audio processing. And with an all-new design, the Siri Remote makes it even easier to watch shows and movies on Apple TV with intuitive navigation controls. Together with tvOS — the most powerful TV operating system — Apple TV 4K works seamlessly with Apple devices and services to magically transform the living room in ways that everyone in the family will love.

Apple Podcasts

Apple today unveiled Apple Podcasts Subscriptions, a global marketplace for listeners to discover premium subscriptions offered by their favorite creators alongside millions of free shows on Apple Podcasts.
Starting in May, listeners in more than 170 countries and regions can sign up for premium subscriptions that include a variety of benefits curated by creators, such as ad-free listening, access to additional content, and early or exclusive access to new series. Listeners will be able to enjoy premium subscriptions from independent voices and premier studios, including Tenderfoot TV, Pushkin Industries, Radiotopia from PRX, and QCODE, to leading media and entertainment brands, including NPR, the Los Angeles Times, The Athletic, Sony Music Entertainment, and many more.

Apple today unveiled an all-new stunning purple finish for iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini. This new color beautifully accentuates the flat aluminum edges of iPhone 12, which are perfectly color-matched to the precision-milled back glass. Both models feature an advanced dual-camera system that delivers powerful computational photography features and the highest-quality video in a smartphone, with expansive edge-to-edge Super Retina XDR displays with OLED for a brighter, more immersive viewing experience, and the Ceramic Shield front cover, providing the biggest jump in durability ever on iPhone. The Apple-designed A14 Bionic — the fastest chip in a smartphone — powers every experience on iPhone 12 while efficiently managing battery life. iPhone 12 models also bring the best 5G experience, and introduce high-powered wireless charging with MagSafe and a new ecosystem of accessories that easily attach to iPhone.

6 Benefits of Using Vehicles to Advertise Your Small Business

Having a small business can be tough work, with a small budget and a long list of things that need doing. Advertising is all about getting your name out there, with numerous ways to go about it, but what better way to do it than an eye-catching wrap for your vehicle. Getting a vehicle wrap will not only make a memorable first impression but a lasting one at that. If you’re not already sold on the idea, here are some benefits to sway you forward.

Economical

As mentioned earlier, small businesses are put under tight budget pressures. Putting your advert on billboards and other recurrent-cost methods just guzzles your finances. Vehicle wraps from companies like remixwraps.com are cost-effective, with the average professional price for a full wrap being $2,500-$5,000. This seems like a lot of money, but the staying power will give you years of advertisement, and you will easily make a return through increased custom.

Protection

Having your car vehicle wrapped will add a layer of protection from dents and scratches made by flying debris. You don’t need to worry about damaging the original paintwork of the vehicle because specialists can easily remove the vehicle wrap; you will never know it was there.

Attention Please!

Colorful vehicle wraps will put your company above the rest; white vans just don’t grab people’s attention. Your colorful vehicle will automatically draw eyes. When designing your vehicle wrap, you can use color to generate different responses by doing a little reading into color psychology.

Far and Wide

If you’re lucky enough to have a fleet of vehicles and travel across the country, you can reach thousands of viewers per month. Vehicle wrapping is often seen a lot more over people stumbling across websites by chance because anyone can access the advert.

Subtlety

On the whole, customers react better to advertising that isn’t in their face, like radio adverts and handing out flyers. Advertisements with as few disruptions to potential customers are the most effective. Vehicle wraps get your message across without causing any disturbance to anyone. Another form of non-aggressive advertising is using social media.

Get Moving

Stationary adverts like billboards rely heavily on potential customers coming across them, and during rush hour, these are likely to be the same people daily. Investing in a vehicle wrap allows your advert to become mobile and will be seen by more people.

DIY

You should ideally get a professional to do your car, but it is possible to do it yourself. It will take longer, and you could mess it up before you master it, but once you have you have mastered the technique, you will save a lot of money – especially if you have more than one vehicle.

Hopefully, now you have seen enough benefits of vehicle wrapping for adverts that you’re already scrambling to get a quote. If not, then get on the phone and speak to a reputable specialist – an investment in vehicle wrapping is a futureproof spend.

11 Important Cyber Security Tips That Will Help Seniors Protect Themselves From Hackers

With the increasing impact of the digital world, an AgeUK study shows that senior citizens are making use of emerging technologies – in fact the number of over 75s using the internet in particular has doubled in the last five years.

Seniors are not only using the internet, but the majority of seniors also own smart phones, online shop and 50% of internet users aged 65-75 have a social media account. The main ways seniors tend to use the internet is to keep in touch with family abroad, for general browsing and for entertainment purposes.

Although seeing the older generation taking advantage of the latest trends and technologies shows the positive impact of these innovations on people of all ages, there are also many potential threats they need to be aware of when using the internet. Only 32% of seniors surveyed claimed they were confident using the internet safely, and 25% of over 75s stated that technology made them feel vulnerable. Seniors particularly need to be aware of how to use the internet safely as they appear to have a lack of confidence and awareness, making them prime targets for cyber criminals. 1 in 5 seniors also don’t have anti-virus software installed on their devices leaving them vulnerable.

This infographic created by Focus Training introduces simple yet effective ways seniors can safely use the internet and protect themselves from potential cyber attacks.

Smart Appliances & the Kitchen of Tomorrow [Infographic]

Some of us might be slow to adopt new technologies, while others will have the latest gadgets and software as soon as it appears on the market. People in the latter category have most likely embraced the concept of the smart kitchen, where appliances such as fridges, cookers and washing machines are programmed with unprecedented intelligence and can be controlled from your smartphone.

With the smart appliance market growing from $40 million in 2010 to $9.7 billion today, and projected to break $26 billion in the next three years, it’s clearly a market that is rapidly growing. Already there are numerous apps and smart kitchen products on the market, including the Egg Minder, which updates you on the number of eggs you have at home; and the Prep Pad, which detects the nutritional content of any food item placed on it. Meanwhile, apps such as How to Cook Everything and Jamie Oliver’s Recipes come stocked with enough recipes to suit even the fussiest eater.

This infographic from Pennywell shows that smart kitchen appliances can provide numerous benefits and make your household chores a great deal easier. If you want to learn more about fridges that can tell you what’s inside when you’re 100+ miles away, or ovens that know how much cooking time a recipe needs, then feast your eyes downwards to gaze into the kitchen of tomorrow.

The History of Microsoft Windows [Infographic]

Are you a PC or a Mac user? Either way, you can’t really deny the success that Windows have had over the years – being the world’s number one operating system for PC users, but success aside, are you aware of all the things Windows have gone through since the launch of their very first operating system?

Thankfully, an infographic has been released by Best STL which manages to detail the rich and ground-breaking journey that the Windows platform has gone through in its 30 year lifetime.

Windows 1 was launched in 1985 – a year after the very first Apple Macintosh computer was released. Primarily run on MS-DOS installations, which allowed pre-existing MS-DOS software and new graphical programs to be run. The reception of the operating system was met with mixed responses from critics, but that was not to stop the company from moving forward in realising the power that Windows had.

Three years later and Windows 2 was released. This marked an important occasion for the company as it was the first system that featured Microsoft Word & Microsoft Excel –essential software that is still widely used today.

In 1990, Windows 3 was released & was the most comparable version to the Apple software, with graphical advancements that made it the most successful version of Windows thus far. It was also the first version to be pre-installed on hard drives by PC-compatible manufacturers, allowing consumers to have the system on their PC straight out of the box.

The success of Windows heightened with the releases of Windows 1995 and 1998 as more and more people started owning computers in their homes. Alongside the release of Internet Explorer, this meant there was more demand for a PC than ever before.

The most popular version of Windows probably still stands at 2001’s release of Windows XP. According to an article in 2009, it was reported as “still having nearly 59 per cent market share” and there is still demand for updates today. Even after the releases of Vista, 7, 8 and 9.

It’ll be interesting to see what Windows 10 brings when it is released at the end of July. Will it be a Windows 98 or XP type release or will it make just as much of an impact as the Millennial Edition or Windows 8 did? Have a look at the infographic below.

What is Productivity About and How to Handle Prohibitors

office-work

We’ve already written about some of the best productivity apps at work, in case you forgot, but how on earth do you manage to stay productive that long? Well, it’s not an easy question to answer but for the most part it is possible to some extent, as long as you can handle much of the stoppers that stand in your way.

And what are these obstacles that are preventing you from doing more?

For instance, did you know that employees spend 20 hours a week online, and 5 hours a week surfing non-work related sites? And that social media costs employers up to $28 Billion each year? Not to mention all the bad communication, as well as cell phones, co-workers or the countless office meetings that we’re going through the day.

Well, It’s definitely something we all need to address and thankfully, SurePayroll and Ghergich & Co just did. Below is an infographic that discusses productivity, along with some other common things that may have a strong effect on it, and what employers are doing about it.

Microsoft Apps to Come Preloaded On LG, Sony, Other Android Tablets

microsoft-powerpoint-in-android-tablet

Microsoft is one of these tech-oriented giant companies that seem to know a thing or two about software distribution across the pond. But what about apps? Glad you asked, because there’s something going on around the business of this corp these days – strategic wise, of course. Based on the details shared, the Windows maker announced that it has officially partnered with more than 20 Android tablet makers, among them are also big leaders like LG and Sony, to bundle its apps on future tablet versions or updates. Some of the apps which are due to come pre-loaded inside include the popular video messaging app Skype, as well as Bing, OneDrive, OneNote, Outlook Word, Excel, and a variety some others. A sort of an Office Suite, if you will. The purpose of this move is likely to create a cross-platform functionality for its apps. Whether this is an indication that Microsoft is giving up on its own platform or not, I have no idea, but time will surely tell.

Samsung’s iPad Killer The Galaxy Tab S2 To Launch Next Month

ipad-tablet-samsung-mobile

Samsung is going all-force with its Galaxy Tab tablet lineup. At this point, it would be safe to assume we’re all too familiar with the wildly successful Tab S series, right? I mean, seriously who hasn’t heard about it, especially if you’re into the tech and gadget worlds.

And Sammy has definitely put an honorable effort to create a nice, functional user-friendly slate that can be truly compared against the iPad. However, it doesn’t seem to have been enough. As it looks, the company still tries to improve it in a yearly basis.

The latest word on the street is that the S. Korean corp. is planning to announce their awesomely designed Galaxy Tab S2 next month. The new series, which will probably consist of 8-inch and 9.7-inch screen-sized slabs, is rumored to be much thinner (only 5.4mm) than the 6.4-mm iPad Air 2, and with a similar resolution screen at 2,048 x 1,536.

Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S2-Tablet

What’s inside, you may ask? According to the leaked information, the Galaxy Tab S2 devices are said to be running under Samsung’s latest 64-bit Exynos processor, as well as 3GB of RAM and up to 32GB of internal storage with a microSD slot supporting up to 128GB.

There’s also an Android 5.0.2 Lollipop OS installed, along with an 8 megapixel main rear camera and a 2.1 megapixel shooter upfront. Battery wise, the 8-inch model will have a 3,580 mAh battery unit, while the 9.7-inch comes in with a bigger 5,870 mAh pack.

Same as previous Galaxy S lineup, Samsung is expected to launch four versions of the Tab S2, including both WiFi and Cat. 6 LTE-enabled models of the slates.

In all, this seems like a great upgrade, and while pricing and release dates are sketchy at the moment, we would definitely love to see them sometime next month.

Net Neutrality: Who Is For It, Who Is Against It and Why [Infographic]

net-system

Net Neutrality is one of the most talked about topics at the moment. What exactly does it mean?

Essentially, Net Neutrality is the principle that all Internet traffic should be treated equally. Internet Service providers want to end Net Neutrality and give priority to certain traffic, while the FCC want to maintain Net Neutrality so all Internet traffic is equal.

The overwhelming concern is that if we lose Net Neutrality the Internet as we know it will be gone forever. It will function more like cable television, where service providers are like gatekeepers who present us with the content they want us to see, rather than the user being free to explore the Internet in any way they wish. The Internet needs to remain a level playing field, and the fight for Net Neutrality is about maintaining the Internet as we know it. It is without question a fight worth fighting.

This info-graphic from Pepeyee outlines the main players in the Net Neutrality argument, the benefits of Net Neutrality, and the important wins and losses in the battle to preserve Net Neutrality since Tim Wu coined the term in 2003.

Google Chrome: How It Won The Browsers Battle

Worldwide-browser-market-share

Web browsers have become such a fundamental part of our digital lives. I mean, seriously, who doesn’t use one on a daily basis?!

The launch of Google’s Chrome in 2008 looked unlikely to knock Internet Explorer out the water but flash forward to now and it’s done that and much more.

On its way to glory, Google’s browser outpaced its Mozilla rival by taking a slice of 42.74 percent of all desktop browser market share, with Internet Explorer gaining 13.17 percent in the second place, and Mozilla Firefox with only 11.72 percent on the third.

Chrome has definitely conquered the world, with the popular browser continuing to dominate all three major channels: mobile, desktop and tablets.

Apple WWDC Keynote 2015 Announced: June 8-12

Apple-WWDC-2015-Conference

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference is set for June 8 2015 at San Francisco’s Moscone West. If you’re interested in getting some tix, they’re now available on Apple’s WWDC website from now up until Friday April 17 in three different programs: iOS Developer Program, the iOS Enterprise Developer Program or the Mac Developer Program. We know from previous experience that tickets will probably sell out in minutes so hurry up and get ’em fast before they’re gone (although the Cupertino company says that winners will be picked up “through a random selection process).

As always, the iPhone is once again taking center stage on Apple’s WWDC 2015 keynote event, with a hope to see a new iPhone hardware announcement, along with a brand new iPad, and an update to the Mac OS X operating software.

We’re also likely to hear about Apple’s new music streaming service, which will probably be released in June, based on the current Beats Music app. Apple TV IV is yet another good option we might hear about, but we’re just kind of guessing at this point.

With more than 100 technical sessions presented by Apple engineers, developers from all over the world are invited to learn about some of the new and interesting ways of using the latest and greatest iOS and OS X technologies, as well as some hands-on labs and some super cool events.

Update: Apple bans selfie sticks from WWDC 2015.  I kinda wonder whether it has anything to do with Periscope and Meerkat.

[su_quote]”You may not use selfie sticks or similar monopods within Moscone West or Yerba Buena Gardens,” the rules say. “Solicitation or selling of items or services is not allowed at WWDC. Any attendee conducting these activities may be removed from WWDC. Smoking (including e-cigarettes) is not permitted anywhere inside Moscone West.”[/su_quote]

dell-venue-10-7000-android-tablet

Following on from the initial success of the Venue 8 7000 tablet, one of the best mid-range Android machines available right now, Dell has announced a brand new, bigger iteration of the very same device, the Venue 10 7000.

Claimed to be designed to impress with stunning features, the 10.5-inch paper-thin model has been apparently restructured to increase max performance. Under the lid of  Venue 10’s aluminum body you’ll get to find 2GB of DDR RAM, as well as a 2.3GHz Intel Atom Z3580 processor. There’s also that fabulous 8-megapixel rear camera shooter (supporting Intel’s RealSense3D technology), alongside a 2MP front-facing camera, as well as a 7,000mAh battery pack, delivering up to 15 hours of continuous usage.

Apple’s iOS 8.3 Is Out Now, With New Emojis, Bug Fixes and Wireless CarPlay Support

Apple-emoji

Apple has just rolled out iOS 8.3. This ain’t a big release, but iPhone and iPad owners expecting to upgrade their iDevices should be looking at some truly fantastic improvements inside, including the usual mix of bug fixes for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3rd-party keyboards, and such, as well as a few tasteful enhancements, such as the wireless CarPlay for in-car support, along with some 300 types of emoji for fun. In this context, we should also mention that the new update lists a whole new version of keyboard under the lid, boasting a new scrolling UI.

The latest release also includes a brand new set of languages for Siri, amongst which you might find Russian, Danish, Dutch, Thai, Swedish, Turkish and Portuguese.

In addition to that, Apple has also added an option to download free apps without the need to enter your password, along with the option to report any junk or spam to filter out iMessages that are not sent by your contacts.

Lastly, the update is also said to improve stability and performance of the overall platform, but that is part of the regular ongoing efforts. With that in mind,  there’s also now iCloud Photo Library support which has been optimized to work with the new Photos app on OS X 10.10.3.

Like any previous update release, the software upgrade is likely to be available as an over-the-air update on the Settings section of your iPhone or iPad, as well as on iTunes

Apple Watch Review Roundup: It’s a Good and Promising Product, But You Don’t Necessarily Need One Yet

apple-watch-front

So Apple Watch pre-orders officially start this Friday, but is the watch truly worth the overall excitement? Well, it pretty much depends on who you ask, what’s your budget and what exactly you are looking for.

judging by its looks and feel, the Apple Watch could potentially be a good and promising hardware timepiece. With a great set of wonderful features like the beautiful 38/42mm Force Touch display on top, heart rate sensor, Glances, Notifications, GPS, Siri, strong S1 chip, Music, Workout, Faces and Accelerometer, Apple’s new smartwatch device definitely makes some impressive steps towards the future.

That been said, the device still seems to suffer from some early release bugs, which means it does not work exceptionally well for those who have been lucky enough to check it out.

Basically that is the time the reviews for the watch are starting to roll in and for now, they appear to be very positive but the product is still in early phase of development. Below we have posted some review quotes from some notable media and technology publications.

MASHABLE:

I didn’t expect to like the Apple Watch. But I didn’t expect to dislike it either. I feared my reaction would be meh. That would’ve been a shame because I believe in wearables and have been pulling for a breakout star.

The Apple Watch is that breakout star. It’s gorgeous, smart, fun, extensible, expensive (a plus if you want to telegraph luxury and excellence) and an object of true desire.

Apple Watch does as much, maybe more, than competing smartwatches, but it doesn’t demand that you pay attention to it. It also succeeded in its most important task: Getting me to keep my iPhone in my pocket. That’s a pretty impressive feat.

Is my life better because of it? It’s too soon to tell. But what I do know is that I thoroughly enjoy wearing it.

[youtube id=”JOK03KS_USg”]

THE VERGE:

There’s no question that the Apple Watch is the most capable smartwatch available today. It is one of the most ambitious products I’ve ever seen; it wants to do and change so much about how we interact with technology. But that ambition robs it of focus: it can do tiny bits of everything, instead of a few things extraordinarily well. For all of its technological marvel, the Apple Watch is still a smartwatch, and it’s not clear that anyone’s yet figured out what smartwatches are actually for.

[youtube id=”noZAqbn92gM”]

CNET:

You don’t need an Apple Watch. In many ways, it’s a toy: an amazing little do-it-all, a clever invention, a possibly time-saving companion, a wrist-worn assistant. It’s also mostly a phone accessory for now.

In the months and years to come, that may change: with Apple’s assortment of iPads, Macs, Apple TV and who knows what else to come, the watch could end up being a remote and accessory to many things. Maybe it’ll be the key to unlock a world of smart appliances, cars, and connected places. In that type of world, a smartwatch could end up feeling utterly essential.

But the Apple Watch will need better battery life, too. Making it through a day isn’t enough: it needs to last through the night, and another day, and another. The Pebble became my favorite smartwatch because its multiday battery made it feel more like a regular watch. The Apple Watch’s battery life was sacrificed to achieve its superior software, features, and functions.

RECODE:

The Apple Watch’s battery life is not nearly as long-lasting as some other wearable devices, but it’s better than I expected.

Apple has promised that the battery will last 18 hours per charge with normal use. It hasn’t yet died on me during the day, or even late at night. My iPhone actually conked out before the Watch did; this happened to Bonnie, too.

Some people have already decided they’re getting Apple Watch on the day it comes out. Because they love Apple. Because they like new things and being the first to buy them. Because there has been so much hype around this product.

Others may want it because it offers a fluidity that other smartwatches don’t — if you’re already tied to Apple software like iMessage, iTunes, Siri and Health. Watch is the seemingly inevitable extension.

But Apple Watch is not a cure-all, and it’s likely not a timepiece you will pass down to your grandkids. It is a well-designed piece of technology that will go through a series of software updates, until one day, years from now, when the lithium ion battery can no longer hold much of a charge and it won’t seem as valuable to you.

The New York Times:

The Apple Watch is far from perfect, and, starting at $350 and going all the way up to $17,000, it isn’t cheap. Though it looks quite smart, with a selection of stylish leather and metallic bands that make for a sharp departure from most wearable devices, the Apple Watch works like a first-generation device, with all the limitations and flaws you’d expect of brand-new technology.

What’s more, unlike previous breakthrough Apple products, the Watch’s software requires a learning curve that may deter some people. There’s a good chance it will not work perfectly for most consumers right out of the box, because it is best after you fiddle with various software settings to personalize use. Indeed, to a degree unusual for a new Apple device, the Watch is not suited for tech novices. It is designed for people who are inundated with notifications coming in through their phones, and for those who care to think about, and want to try to manage, the way the digital world intrudes on their lives.

Still, even if it’s not yet for everyone, Apple is on to something with the device. The Watch is just useful enough to prove that the tech industry’s fixation on computers that people can wear may soon bear fruit.

What’s most thrilling about the Apple Watch, unlike other smartwatches I’ve tried, is the way it invests a user with a general sense of empowerment. If Google brought all of the world’s digital information to our computers, and the iPhone brought it to us everywhere, the Watch builds the digital world directly into your skin. It takes some time getting used to, but once it clicks, this is a power you can’t live without.

The Wall Street Journal:

I’ve found the Apple Watch isn’t a replacement for the iPhone, but it’s the right screen for many important things. I only look at it in blips, for rarely more than five seconds. It shows me the weather with one finger swipe. It gets physical, gently tapping my wrist when something important needs my attention and lighting up when I lift my arm to look. It nudges when I’ve been sitting too long.

With the Apple Watch, smartwatches finally make sense. The measure of their success shouldn’t be how well they suck you in, but how efficiently they help you get things done. Living on your arm is part of that efficiency—as a convenient display, but also a way to measure your heart rate or pay at a cash register. This is a big idea about how we use technology, the kind of idea we expect from Apple.

For now, the Apple Watch is for pioneers. I won’t pay the $1,000 it would cost for the model I tested, only to see a significant improvement roll in before too long. But I plan to pay $400 for the 42mm Sport version once it’s on sale. That’s worth paying for a front-row seat for what’s next in tech.

BLOOMBERG:

The watch is not life-changing. It is, however, excellent. Apple will sell millions of these devices, and many people will love and obsess over them. It is a wonderful component of a big ecosystem that the company has carefully built over many years. It is more seamless and simple than any of its counterparts in the marketplace. It is, without question, the best smartwatch in the world.

So Apple has succeeded in its first big task with its watch. It made something that lives up to the company’s reputation as an innovator and raised the bar for a whole new class of devices. Its second task—making me feel that I need this thing on my wrist every day—well, I’m not quite sure it’s there yet. It’s still another screen, another distraction, another way to disconnect, as much as it is the opposite. The Apple Watch is cool, it’s beautiful, it’s powerful, and it’s easy to use. But it’s not essential. Not yet.

[youtube id=”SaC00homOiA”]

DARING FIREBALL:

After more than a week of daily use, Apple Watch has more than alleviated any concerns I had about getting through a day on a single charge. I noted the remaining charge when I went to bed each night. It was usually still in the 30s or 40s. Once it was still over 50 percent charged. Once, it was down to 27. And one day — last Thursday — it was all the way down to 5 percent. But that day was an exception — I used the watch for an extraordinary amount of testing, nothing at all resembling typical usage. I’m surprised the watch had any remaining charge at all that day. I never once charged the watch other than while I slept.

I’ve worn a watch every day since I was in 7th grade, almost 30 years ago. I’m used to being able to see the time with just a glance whenever there is sufficient light. Apple Watch is somewhat frustrating in this regard. Even when Wrist Raise detection works perfectly, it takes a moment for the watch face to appear. There’s an inherent tiny amount of lag that isn’t there with a regular watch.

Microsoft Announces a $499 Surface 3 Tablet With Full Windows Operating System

Microsoft-Surface-3-tablet

While the Surface Pro 3 is Microsoft’s best hybrid Tablet/PC to date, the company today announced the launch of a new Surface 3 device, which one can easily describe as a lighter, thinner, and less-expensive iteration of the great Surface Pro 3.

Given that the Pro 3 lineup ranges between $800 to $2,000, Microsoft has apparently decided to adjust the pricing model with the new Surface series, so that it would be more affordable for new consumers as possible, but there is still a lot of stuff here. The new tablet, which boasts a gorgeous 10.8-inch display at 1,920 x 1,080 screen resolution is offered with your choice of either 64GB or 128GB of internal storage, but the higher the storage capacity, the more you’ll pay.

Therefore, a 64GB of internal storage and 2GB of RAM will run you up to $499, while a 4GB RAM model and 128GB storage will set you back for $599, only a hundred dollars more.

Moreover, the slate is powered by a new quad-core 1.6GHz Atom x7 processor under the hood, alongside an 8MP camera on the back and a 3.5MP shooter on the front. The Surface also includes a multitude of ports, it sports a full-sized USB 3.0, plus a Mini DisplayPort, a microSD card expansion, a microUSB charging port, and a 3.5mm headphone socket for audio. A 4G LTE network support is optional.

There’s also a three-position kickstand at the back, but you can find these tablets even more expensive with the optional 3-designed Type Cover keyboard bundle (+$129) which converts the slabs into a full-fledged laptop form factor, running under a full Windows 8.1 OS.  In addition to that, you can add in another $49 if you want to add a bit of color to your tablet with a Surface pen.

Microsoft-Surface-3-Type-Cover

As for the goodies, Microsoft is giving away, for a very limited time, a year of free subscription to Office 365 including a full version of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote, as well as 1 TB of Microsoft’s OneDrive online storage service.

The Surface 3 is due out on May 5, so stay tuned for exciting news to come!

Blackphone Will Keep Your Mobile Communication Secured

blackphone

If privacy is important to you, and I’m sure it does, the Blackphone is most probably what you’re after in a mobile device. The phone, which operates under a customized Android platform, dubbed PrivatOS, is featuring industrial grade encryption technology that makes encrypted communication via IMs, voice, video, and chat, as easy as sending a regular text message.

The 4.7-inch smartphone that was initially designed by security guru Phil Zimmermann, includes a 2GHz quad-core processor under the lid, paired with 1GB of RAM, a novel array of very smart sensors in combination with GPS support, as well as various privacy tools pre-installed.

The Blackphone protects your communications at the top security level but how exactly does it do that? And how does it work in comparison to some other smartphones?

First Apple Watch Apps Start Showing Up On iTunes

apple-watch-apps

The Apple watch may not be available till April 24th, but that doesn’t mean you can’t pretend to own one. Well, not exactly the watch itself but more like some of the third-party apps people can expect to use on the watch. As some of you may have noticed, a few selected apps which have been specifically designed to be used on the Cupertino smartwatch, are starting to hit Apple’s own App Store today. Among these new applications, you can find some of the most popular ones such as Twitter, WeChat, Expedia, Things, Target, Dark Sky and numerous others, all of which are now available for download to your iPhone.

Mind you, there is no clear option to be able to use the apps with a smartwatch functionality, other than your daily regular use – that option will only be valid for those who’ve had a previous matching sync (between the watch and their phones) like journalists, for example, who have tested the watch before; the rest of us will have to wait patiently.

More of these apps are expected to roll out as we draw closer to the official release of the watch.

Apple Releases a New, Colorful Line of Watches from $349 to over $10,000

apple-watch-models

Apple’s smartwatch, or as we all tend to call it, Apple Watch or the iWatch, so to speak, has been officially released, after getting unveiled in September 2014. The line which includes three major watch categories is said to be available for pre-orders on april 10th, shipping on April 24th. CEO Tim Cook has officially confirmed most of the details that already emerged while adding some more interesting info to convince us all of its great potential.

Apple only mentioned a $349 base price back in September and today we have been fortunate to learn that prices will indeed start at $349 for the Basic 38mm Sport smartwatch model and will eventually climb all the way up to more than $10,000 for an 18K Watch Edition flavor. That depends of course on which, size, and band you guys decide to choose. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Apple Watch Sport edition made of aluminum alloy. Comes in silver or Space Gray flavors and includes five different color plastic wristbands – $349 for 38mm, $399 for 42mm screen sizes.
  • Apple Watch Stainless Steel case edition – Starts at $549 for the 38mm model and up to $1,049, depending on which, size, and band. The 42mm device is $50 more on each category.
  • Apple Watch Edition is the most expensive watch in the series. It features an 18-karat gold case and will run for $10,000 for the “entry” level model and up to $17,000 for the top Premium version.

As mentioned, the Apple Watch, which boasts an Apple S1 processor under the hood, will go live in 38mm (1.32-inch) and 42mm (1.5-inch) Retina screens with sapphire (optional) and display resolution of 272×340 and 312×390, respectively (based on the Apple Watch SDK).

Dimensions 38.6 x 33.3 x 10.5mm, 42.5g or 42 x 35.9 x 10.5mm, 50g.

Apple-Watch-Availability

First round of global release said to include countries like the UK, the U.S, Germany, Australia, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Canada, and France.

Apple’s tim Cook claims that the Apple watch is the most advanced timepiece ever created. The Apple Watch is accurate to within 50 milliseconds of the ‘Universal Time Standard’.

Apple-Watch-Sketch

Any Apple watch has different faces and different configurations. There’s a Digital Touch feature letting you send a sketch, a tap, or even your heartbeat to your dear ones as long as they have an Apple Watch as well.

You can easily answer a call or a message right from your Apple Watch using the built-in speaker and mic — and make phone calls too but only via your iPhone device. In this context I should mention that some Chinese Android smartwatches also include an independent SIM card tray which, unfortunately, you don’t get to see in the Cupertino version.

Apple-Watch-White

The Apple watch has all sorts of health features and at the end of the week, it sends you a little health report of what you’ve done (or what you haven’t). Thw watch encourages you to sit less, move more and get some exercise to stay in shape.

Obviously, notifications you receive on the iPhone can automatically appear on the Apple Watch thanks to the Notification app which you can already download from the App Store. The watch is also powered by Siri, so you can talk to the screen and pose the weirdest questions you want – Simply raise your wrist and say “Hey Siri” to do all kinds of things with it.

Other apps and features allow you to scroll through and like images on Instagram right from your wrist, Request a ride on Uber with Apple Watch, without reaching for your phone. you can even check into your hotel and unlock your room with the watch, not to mention the ability to control your personal garage door from afar and so many other different forms.

And to the most interesting part (other than price) – Apple watch designed with All Day battery life, so you’re getting approximately around 18 hours of continuous work. Not so bad after all.

Update1: Apple has just released iOS 8.2 with support for the Apple Watch. The latest and greatest release of the iOS comes pre-loaded with the Apple Watch app inside (which cannot be removed), so that you will get the chance to handle your watch, install different apps and tweak different settings. Basically, the watch requires a sync with an iPhone 5 or above, running under the iOS 8.2 version inside; otherwise, it simply won’t work. You can download iOS 8.2 immediately from the App Store, and get for your phone a few minor improvements in stability, as well as some basic bug fixes and changes to the health app and such, but nothing so biggie to be honest, besides the noticeable addition of the Apple smartwatch support.

Update2: Apple Watch includes 8 GB of storage, allows 2 GB of music and 75 MB of photos.

Update3: Apple Watch pre-orders to start at 12:01 a.m. PDT on April 10, or 3:01 a.m. on the East Coast time.

Update4: Apple Adds a ‘Guided Video‘ Page to Apple Watch with a handful of videos showcasing the different type of features, such as Messages, Faces, and Digital Touch.

This way or another, we will be here to discuss the details live, so BOOKMARK this post, and come join us to the Apple event as soon as it officially happens.

Huawei Intros Giant 7-Inch MediaPad X2 Phablet

huawei-mediapad-x2-gold-phablet

It was just a year ago when Huawei announced the release of the 7-inch MediaPad X1 tablet, which was until recently considered to be the lightest in the world. Today at WMC 2015, the company introduced an updated version of this giant Android Phablet with some various changes and upgrades all over the place to make it a better machine all-round.

The 7-Inch device that goes by the typical name of MediaPad x2, is said to arrive with a sturdy aluminum casing on board, featuring a 64-bit ultra octa-core chipset inside, as well as a 1200 x 1920 HD IPS display on top (323 ppi) and a Mali-T628 GPU for the graphics. Measuring in at a mere 7.18mm and tipping the scales at 239g, this beautiful slab will also be offering 2GB of RAM along with a 802.11ac WiFi connectivity, and 16GB of internal storage. Well, at least that’s what you’re getting in the X2 Silver version, while the premium Gold is offering 3GB of RAM and up to 32GB of internal storage.

Both models will also include an Android 5.0 Lollipop for the OS, alongside a massive 5,000 mAh Li-Polymer battery, as well as a 13-megapixel (f/2.4) rear camera and 5-megapixel (f/2.2) shooter up front.

Pricing and availability are yet to be determined, but they are expected to be around the same range of the previous model.

Apple Invitations to March 9 ‘Spring Forward’ Event are Out

Apple-Watch-Event

Apple iWatch “Spring forward” event officially announced and due to take place on March 9 at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco, California, starting at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. “Spring forward” – That’s the tagline on the invitations Apple has sent out for the special event, and you all probably know what that means, right? For those who haven’t made the connection, the “Spring” title has a double meaning, as it can easily be taken as being about the season that is following winter and preceding summer, and March 9 is when the daylight savings time starts Stateside, and also the spring as what mechanical watches tend to have.

So clearly it is a watch-related event, or perhaps just the highlight of it, while the Cupertino company might have plans to unveil a 12-inch MacBook Air with Retina display along with some other goodies inside. Moreover, we’re still curious about the battery life of the upcoming watches and official pricing as well as additional interesting info.

Stay tuned for more updates to come.

Sony’s Next-Gen Xperia Z4 Tablet Unveiled (Update: Now Official)

Sony-Xperia-Z4-tablet

What’s that, Sony‘s brand new Xperia Z4 tablet leaked? Yeah, that definitely looks like it. Oops! It’s not that the company was intentionally leaking the next-generation of its high-end Android tablet a few days ahead of MWC 2015, that’s not the case this time, but the new one looks impressive and immediately more professional than the Xperia Z3 Compact, right?

While the image has already been pulled by Sony from Xperia Lounge, it does hint at the impending launch of the tablet, on March 3rd, and that it is likely to include a high-res 2K resolution display, as well as the “latest ultra fast processor” inside – whatever that means. Additionally, Sony describes the slim-looking tablet, which is expected to run under Android 5.0 Lollipop OS, as a lightweight premium device that features an “industry-leading battery performance.” Uh Oh, that sounds REALLY cool.

Unfortunately that’s all we can share about it for now, as they’ve yet to announce size, specifications, pricing, availability or anything else important to know, but we’ll be sure to bring you the updates very soon.

Update: At MWC 2015 in Barcelona, Sony has officially introduced its latest and greatest flagship tablet device, the Xperia Z4. The 6.1mm super-slim slate is housing a beautiful 10.1-inch 2K resolution display, tucked with a Snapdragon 810 processor under the hood as well as your choice of either Wi-Fi or LTE variants, packing at least 32GB of integrated memory. Out of the box, the Xperia Z4 slab is likely to run the latest edition of Android Lollipop operating system, and there’s an optional keyboard dock that literally turns the tablet into an hybrid laptop/tablet machine. There’s still no word on pricing, but the two will launch globally starting June 2015.

InboxVudu Helps You Quickly Get to the Important Emails In Your Inbox

InboxVudu

I’m sure you all probably know how utterly frustrating it is when you get your mailbox full of email that you just don’t have the time of day to read and respond. The tricky part is that you can’t actually see or decide which is more important than the other and therefore should be given priority when you finally have some guilt-free time left over.

InboxVudu is a new startup that’s looking to solve this problem. The service which was recently launched to the market in Beta mode and which is claiming to be your inbox’s best friend, will help its users to determine the importance of each email that finds its way into their inbox, by (hopefully) letting them know in case they happen to find themselves “in danger of missing an important email or forgetting to follow up with someone on time.”

The service which uses advanced Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning technologies will basically hook up with your Gmail or Google Apps account in just a few clicks, while working silently in the background to make sure you get some sort of a “too long, didn’t read” version of your incoming emails and help ensure that you do not forget to respond to those important messages getting lost in the rest of the inbox.

Although the service is in private beta, InboxVudu was nice enough to give Technologer readers 100 invites so that you can try it out, free of charge.
